Coasting Along Pembroke’s Path – Part 2
Coasting Along Pembroke’s Path – Part 1
Fought at Pembroke
Mighty Pembroke! Ancient Pembroke!ย
Silent ruin clad in time.ย
Doughty gatehouse! Foes forbidden!ย
Dominating Norman power.ย
Great Carnarvon! Sombre Harlech!ย
North-east guardians watching tides.ย
Wrexhamโs Chirk! Severnโs Caldicot!ย
Grown from wealth of Norman pride,
built to conquer, spread control,ย
kings advanced through looming stone,ย
that the conquered keep their peace:ย
lords and armies dined and drank,ย
splendid in their ducal ways โย
in their shadow locals shivered.ย
Dare besiege? Daring death!ย
Mighty Pembroke! Ancient Pembroke!ย
Castleโs proud promontory โ
money proffered, smiles and greetings,ย
guided tour through history,ย
towers, rooms and exhibitions,ย
tourists stroll, the new invaders,ย
roam along stone corridors,ย
cavern hidden, gruesome dungeon,ย
till refreshments in the cafรฉ.ย
Mighty Pembroke! Ancient Pembroke!ย
Heavy dark stonesโ open welcome!
On the Cleddau Bridge
Behind the curves of land and port,ย
receiver quays the ferry sought,ย
the slow incoming Irish shipย
with people, cars and freight each trip:ย
a hill rose up to Pembroke Dock,
main streets unseen past nearby blockย
of industry and takeaways,ย
somewhere among them station stays:ย
up through some houses white as rimeย
the walking route demands a climbย
that brings the path by last abodeย
and comes to fast and busy road.ย
Smooth drive onto an airborne ridge
as cars stream on the Cleddau Bridge,ย
another stream thatโs way belowย
with gleaming calm far hills bestow,ย
like resting boats with journeys done,ย
and caught in light of wintry sun
in spread of sky cross riverโs breadth,ย
its flow seen down in bridgeโs depth.
While over river traffic went,
to Neyland walked down steep descent,ย
arriving at a boating yardย
and statue of great Isambard
where sidings lay and station stood,ย
to sail to Ireland people could:ย
once place of bustle, noise and crowdsย
with shipsโ and enginesโ smoky shrouds,ย
itโs quiet now by Cleddau streamย
with white-washed housesโ homely dream:ย
refreshments sparse, no shop, no pubย
so upward marched to townshipโs hub,
acquired a drink in small cafรฉ,
sells cake and workersโ takeaway.ย
A welcome rest we could not spurn,ย
then left past church, dark, taciturn,ย
to come to foot of angled roadย
whose steeps a walkerโs muscles goadย
while moving under woodland leavesย
the Cleddau Bridge eye last perceives.
Oily Images
Beyond our modern hotelโs window:ย
beside a quiet still marina:ย
away from central Milford Haven:ย
unseen the next dayโs railway station:ย
there lies its bay with well-spread headlands,ย
its gleaming sea of tidal depthsย
among the hills of placid strengths,ย
where oilโs refined, with power station,ย
ships silent at their anchorage,ย
each vessel with its hold and bridgeย
where captain feels his privilege,ย
plus usage of his freight envisage?ย
They lie at each discharging jetty,ย
where seagulls float like blown confetti,ย
but near the ships saw no one moving,ย
though metal monsters not unsoothingย
discharging oil โย
far pumps uncoilย
so cars are filledย
oil here distilled,ย
while tankers rest,
by waves caressed,ย
great iron urnsย
till sail returns,ย
must leave the dock at Milford Haven,ย
go where await the oil fieldsโ drilling,ย
then gorged once more, come vessels laden,ย
bestow on cars their petrol filling.
Epilogue : From the Pembroke Coast
Deep rumbling growl at railway station,ย
four hours from Milford, destinationย
the home that saw us at our leaving,ย
ahead nine days new world perceiving โย
the towns, the cities, most just passing,ย
towards the coast, our footwear taskingย
between each nightโs accommodationย
since Saundersfootโs arrival station:ย
from Amroth round to Milford Haven,ย
past haunting cliffs not for the craven,ย
down steep, up steep, each stream worn gully,ย
whose oozing mud paths quickly sullyย
the boots once clean before the journey,ย
our mode of transport as we sternlyย
begin each day, with bodies rested,ย
each route ahead be well contested:ย
soft grass along the clifftops lying,ย
past castles built for war and spying,ย
small stony coves, wide sandy beaches,ย
as step by step each evening reaches โย
comes long cool pint to mark the ending,ย
then meal at local pub attending,ย
another bed our day deeds sealingย
before new cliffs and tides revealing:ย
there may be soreness, muscles weary,ย
but by the walks are hearts made cheery,ย
accomplished was the planning talking,ย
completed now our stay for walking:ย
at Milford Havenโs farewell station,ย
for what weโve known a commendation,ย
the pleasure of that Pembroke natureย
may call a journey back in future.
