A dramatic oil painting by contemporary landscape artist Sarah Jane Brown will feature in a new art exhibition launching the annual Pembrokeshire Art Trail at West Wales Arts Centre at Peppers in Fishguard. Opening Saturday 17th May, this new exhibition curated by North Pembrokeshire Open Studios aims to introduce this year’s artists and makers, to share a diverse collection of works previewing the sights and experiences that visitors can expect from this year’s Art Trail.

A regular North Pembrokeshire Open Studios artist, Sarah Jane has welcomed visitors to her studio each year for the Art Trail, and is excited to be showing her work at this group exhibition.

Contemporary artist Sarah Jane Brown paints the Welsh coast, using the landscape to describe thoughts and emotions. Her work echoes traditional notions of the sublime, reminding us that being in a wild and rugged landscape is both humbling and uplifting. Light, space, colour and movement are her hallmarks, from which she aims to create moments of reflection.

Pembrokeshire’s annual Art Trail takes place each year at the end of the summer. Launched in 2018, the North Pembrokeshire Open Studios Art Trail offers visitors the opportunity to explore the Pembrokeshire countryside and discover local artists and makers in an inspirational fortnight of art.

This year’s event runs from Saturday 23rd August to Saturday 6th September, and in late June / early July an Art Trail brochure should be available to pick up locally or download online. The first exhibition to launch the Art Trail opens at West Wales Arts Centre at Peppers, Saturday 17th May to Saturday 31st May, with the second planned to take place alongside the Art Trail from Saturday 16th August to Saturday 6th September.

Sarah Jane studied Fine Art Painting at Carmarthen School of Art, graduating with a first- class honours degree. In 2020, she was awarded full membership of the Guild Society of Artists, part of the Fine Art Trade Guild. She has exhibited in many solo and group shows.

Highlights include prestigious exhibitions with the Royal Cambrian Academy in North Wales, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the ING Discerning Eye at London’s Mall Galleries.

In March, Pembrokeshire artist Sarah Jane Brown will show her landscapes at the Exhibition of Contemporary Welsh Art & Photography, back for its 7th year at the London Welsh Centre.

Opening to the public on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March, the event celebrates Welsh creativity, with work by Sarah Jane and other talented Welsh artists and photographers. It launches with a Private View on Friday 28th March.

The London Welsh Centre is a cultural and community centre that promotes Welsh culture and language in London. It hosts a wide range of cultural activities with a distinctly Welsh flavour.

The art exhibition is part of Wales Week London, the largest annual showcase of activities and events that celebrate and promote everything great about Wales, and takes place from 20th February to 8th March.

Coastal paintings by contemporary artist Sarah Jane Brown will feature at a special show of Welsh art in London this month – the Exhibition of Contemporary Welsh Art & Photography 2024. The exhibition starts with an invite-only Private View on Friday 16th February to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, and continues throughout the weekend on 17th and 18th February, from 11 am to 5 pm each day.

This vibrant art exhibition is part of a larger cultural event called Wales Week in London and takes place at the London Welsh Centre, a community and arts centre on Gray’s Inn Road, Camden.

Wales Week in London presents a fortnight of cultural activities and events to celebrate everything great about Wales and takes place from 16th February to 6th March.

A coastal landscape painting by contemporary Welsh landscape artist Sarah Jane Brown has reached the finals of the Wales Contemporary / Cymru Gyfoes International Art Competition 2023. The awards take place on Friday, 20th October, at 2.30 pm at the Waterfront Gallery in Milford Haven, and everyone is welcome to view the exhibition of the final selected works at the gallery between Saturday, 21st October and Wednesday, 20th December.

Sarah Jane takes inspiration from the coastal landscape of her Pembrokeshire home, drawing on emotions experienced whilst walking the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Her paintings reflect internal landscapes through the beauty of the Pembrokeshire skies and countryside, the natural drama of the elements and the sea.

“Being alone on the beach in the winter may seem a little melancholy, but it provides an introspective and intimate opportunity for some much-needed headspace and perhaps a little self-discovery,” says Sarah Jane. “I am thrilled that my painting, ‘Winter walk’, has been selected for the final stage of the Wales Contemporary / Cymru Gyfoes International Art Competition 2023.”

Now in its fourth year, Wales Contemporary / Cymru Gyfoes is an international open competition developed by the Waterfront Gallery with support from the Welsh Government. A prestigious panel of individuals in the art and design industry, designer Mehdi Moazzen, artist Janette Kerr and Professor of Design Innovation Ashley Hall, will judge the submissions, and there is a prize fund worth £12,000 to be awarded, with a main prize of £3,000.

A painting by contemporary Welsh landscape artist Sarah Jane Brown has reached the finals of the Art Unlimited Open Art Competition 2023. The award ceremony will take place at the Bridport Art Centre on Friday 15th September, from 6.30 – 9 pm, where prizes will be presented. The Open Art Exhibition will then take place at Art Unlimited Gallery in Bridport from the 16th to the 27th of September.

The submissions were assessed by four skilled judges including Lady Victoria Conran and Global President of Christie’s Auctioneers, Jussi Pylkkanen. Select finalists will have their work loaded onto Christie’s live website and viewed by their global art buyers. The first prize is £2500, plus there are several other prizes.

“Our surroundings form a part of us. They shape our perceptions, thoughts and ideals. There is something about being immersed in nature that gives clarity and focus to the space within,” says Sarah Jane. “I am thrilled that my painting ‘On the reef’ has resonated with the judges and reached the finals of the Art Unlimited Open Art Competition.”

Art Unlimited launched its first Open Art Competition in 2022 and promised to return this year with a bigger, better event, including opening the competition to international artists. They succeeded and received a great response. The number of entries has meant that they will be able to give something back to the community a year ahead of plan, details of which will be announced at the awards evening.

An atmospheric oil painting of a wave by contemporary Welsh landscape artist Sarah Jane Brown has been selected to feature at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition in Mall Galleries, London. “Getting outside gives us a different perspective”, says Sarah Jane. “Science can even prove that shifting our focus to a panoramic view or looking towards the horizon has a calming effect on our brains and even our physiology. Even a simple gaze up at the sky offers us a momentary experience of infinity! It is exciting that my painting ‘A clear direction’ has been selected for this year’s Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition, and I look forward to seeing it on display and sharing that sense of perspective at the Mall Galleries.”

The Royal Society of Marine Artists was founded in 1939 as the Society of Marine Artists. In 1966 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted it the title Royal Society of Marine Artists, and early members included Charles Pears, Montague Dawson, Claude Muncaster, Norman Wilkinson, Rowland Hilder and Edward Wesson, all eminent artists in their day and whose work is held in major national collections. Many of the current members are equally eminent in their field and their work will be valued and appreciated for generations to come.

Now in its 78th year, this exhibition is a showcase for the best in contemporary marine art, whether that is painting, drawing, printmaking, or sculpture, and as such the exhibition.

Pembrokeshire Artist to Launch New Paintings Collection at Jubilee Weekend Open Studio Event

Pembrokeshire artist Sarah Jane Brown will host an Open Studio event over the Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend, from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June, and everyone is welcome to visit.

Pembrokeshire artist Sarah Jane Brown will show her work in London’s Mall Galleries this autumn, alongside some of Britain’s leading marine artists, at a prestigious annual exhibition by The Royal Society of Marine Artists.

Her seascape painting ‘Through takes less effort’ has been selected from hundreds of submissions and will be on display at the exhibition in London between 30th September to 10th October. With her work included in the event, Sarah Jane also has the chance of being awarded one of several prizes that The Royal Society of Marine Artists issues each year.

“It may seem counter-intuitive,” says Sarah Jane, “but ask any surfer or sea swimmer, and they’ll tell you that when faced with a ‘green wall’ of water, the path of least resistance is straight through. When I first discovered that duck-diving through the waves was safer, quicker, and so much easier physically, it was liberating, but to start with, it took courage. It’s a good analogy for many things in life; often, going headfirst through the things we fear is rewarding and turns out to be far easier than we imagined. I’m always inspired to paint the sea not only because of its physical properties but because it provokes such powerful thoughts and emotions.”

This is the fourth time that Sarah Jane has enjoyed the experience of having her paintings selected for exhibition with The Royal Society of Marine Artists at London’s Mall Galleries. Her painting ‘Transgression’ was selected in 2012, ‘I’m blown away’ in 2016 and ‘Impact’ in 2017, and she is delighted that her seascape painting ‘Through takes less effort’ will join this year’s exhibition.

The Royal Society of Marine Artists is widely recognised as the focal point for much of Britain’s finest contemporary marine art and many of the country’s leading marine artists are elected members of the Society. This year’s annual exhibition celebrates all aspects of the sea with themed works in a broad range of styles and media. The common theme is the sea and tidal waters, and the exhibition features pieces selected from elected members and non-members.

Contemporary landscape painter Sarah Jane Brown recently received an award from the Guild Society of Artists to officially acknowledge the high standard of her work exhibited in the Guild Artists Exhibition over the last three years. Sarah Jane’s landscapes and seascapes have regularly been selected for the annual prestigious Guild Artists Exhibition that takes place in Stratford-upon-Avon and London each year, and the qualification marks her transition from an Associate Member to a fully qualified Member of the Guild Society of Artists.

On presenting the accolade, the GSA Committee announced that her “work was of a very high standard each year and were only too pleased” to award her “well deserved GSA Letters”.

Sarah Jane was delighted to receive her Certificate of Qualification, and said:

“I’m so thrilled to receive my ‘GSA’ award after three years as an Associate Member. Being a fully qualified Member now gives me a real feeling of belonging to the Guild ‘family’ and a sense of validation that my work is of a consistently high quality. I’m very proud to now use the letters ‘GSA’ after my name and the certificate will be displayed somewhere prominent in the studio for all my visitors and students to see!”

The Guild Society of Artists was formed to help artists further their careers, and is unique in that it is fully integrated into the art business world through its parent organisation, the Fine Art Trade Guild. Formed in 1910, the Fine Art Trade Guild promotes standards of quality and ethics in the Fine Art industry, and provides a wide range of expertise available for artists to access. Guild Trade Members have extensive knowledge in areas that most artists will utilise, such as picture framing, fine art printing and exhibiting artworks.

A recent painting by Sarah Jane Brown titled ‘Out on a Limb’ has been chosen to join an exhibition of paintings at The Discerner Gallery, Mayfair, London.

Artist Sarah Jane Brown to feature in Cardiff Art Exhibition ‘Be Bold for a Change’ celebrating International Women’s Day

A series of landscape paintings by Sarah Jane Brown will feature in a special exhibition celebrating International Women’s Day at Off The Wall Gallery, Cardiff. ‘Be Bold for a Change’ is the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day on March 8th, and this new art exhibition celebrates this inspirational event and female artists. Sarah Jane’s paintings will appear in this mixed group show alongside an exciting range of art in all types of media from some talented names.

This particular series of paintings explore Sarah Jane’s relationship with her immediate environment, using the landscape metaphorically to examine the contrasting perspectives of isolation and belonging. Sarah Jane’s natural ability to convey the intensity of her experiences presents an emotional narrative throughout the body of her work. Intrinsically about connecting and sharing, her paintings offer viewers the opportunity to also experience something that will perhaps make a difference to them.

“That it means something to someone else motivates me to do it,” says Sarah Jane. “I want to move people. I want them to feel something fundamental. I want to give them a moment.”

Sarah Jane Brown lives in the heart of the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in West Wales, where her environment, and mostly maritime career, has instilled a deep affinity with the sea.  As a mature student, she specialised in ‘Fine Art Painting’, gaining a first class honours degree from the West Wales School of the Arts. Since graduating Sarah Jane Brown’s career as a full time professional artist has steadily gained momentum and recognition.
