Outstanding scenery, comfortable carriages and historic steam engines await you here in the heart of Eryri at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways.
Glorious coastlines, ancient oak woodlands, mountains, rivers and castles, all beckon as you embark on your journey on our award winning railways. With some of the most comfortable carriages on any preserved railway – standard or narrow gauge – you can step back in time to a more civilised age.
Our railways connect the towns of Caernarfon, Beddgelert, Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog and offer a number of journey options with named trains taking you back to the evocative days of steam when an express train would transport you to your holiday destination.
If you’re looking to start your journey from Caernarfon, where our newest station sits in the shadow of Caernarfon castle beside the river, you can choose from three different journeys options:
- The Gelert Explorer offers a day out to Beddgelert with time to explore the village.
- The Snowdonia Star travels the full Welsh Highland line on a full day out to Porthmadog travelling coast to coast over the foothills of Yr Wyddfa.
- The Cwellyn is a part day trip to Rhyd Ddu, great for families and doesn’t take too much of your day (only available during the summer holidays)
If you would prefer to start your journey from Porthmadog, visit us at Harbour Station where journey options include:
- The Woodland Wanderer, an idyllic journey to Tan y Bwlch station in heritage carriages with separate compartments, making it a popular choice for families with dogs and young children.
- The Mountain Spirit, which takes you on a journey to Blaenau Ffestiniog, which is surrounded by the slate quarries that make this town so special.
- The Aberglaslyn serves Beddgelert with a choice of a half ay or full day out giving more time to explore the village and great views along the way.
- The Harbourmaster will take you all the way to Caernarfon with time to explore the town.
If you would like to start your journey from Blaenau Ffestiniog, we have one journey option:
- The Quarryman, which is proving popular with our customers as it follows the journey of the slates from Blaenau to the harbour at Porthmadog from where it was shipped all over the world
Visit the website for more information on all these services and our lovely station cafes. Tickets may be booked in advance online, which is recommended at busy times, by phone, or at the stations on the day of travel.
