24cm Double Handle Skillet
Let me begin by telling you a little about Samuel Groves, the company. They were established in 1817 and now have established themselves as a trusted brand for both professional and home cooks across the world. Samuel Groves are best known for their fantastic cookware but also own their Mermaid brand of bakeware. As regards their cookware, this is the only cast iron cookware made in the UK. It is a seriously remarkable Battleship Build range, made from 70% waste material, so I guess no surprise to you that I was seriously impressed with this skillet.
All the pans in their range are pre-seasoned and are perfect for cooking mouth-watering meals, BBQ’s, in all ovens and on hobs. Over time and with frequent use your pan will develop a patina, which is an easy-release surface, making it virtually non-stick. Actually I found with only a couple of uses the working patina was there and putting pans in the dishwasher is not something I’d do, just simply wipe the pan over after cooking. I cannot see, once you’ve tried this skillet how it will not become a favourite, one that you will turn to on a daily basis. Loved that the flat bottom and sloped sides on the pan allow for oil, sauce and other liquids to cook evenly.
I tested this skillet on our rather ancient AGA and was excited to find that it is one of the best pans I’ve ever tried as the heat was evenly distributed across the base. So instead of my cooking being rather a miss, as I’m certainly no chef, everything I tried cooked evenly. I used the AGA simmering hob before transferring to the hot plate. This pan makes cooking very fast if that is required but adaptable for slower cooking should you wish.
It was quite simply hassle-free cooking as I decided to try various dishes including lamb, steak, chicken and a very tasty stir-fry. Sorry to blow my own trumpet, but I really did impress myself! When I had finished cooking and took the pan off the AGA plate, the heat was retained, which gave plenty of time for plating up. It’s also an easy job to wash this skillet by hand and by just handwashing only, you’ll preserve your pan.
I also loved that I could start food off on the top of the AGA and then transfer easily to one of the ovens. The ergonomic stainless-steel classic handles are comfortable and have been riveted to provide extra strength.
This Britannia pan has an artisan feel thanks to its skilled hand casting and hand finishing, so very cleverly the company have created a perfect range of pans that will last you a lifetime – yes a lifetime! I’m super impressed that this company offers a lifetime guarantee against defects in workmanship and faulty materials. Should a refurbishment service be required, this is available too. I think investing in pans that are for life makes perfect sense.
