Trousers from Rohan

Women’s Roamer Walking Trousers

I’m wedded to trousers, I am a trouser girl and there’s no doubt about that, but it does mean that I’m very fussy as I know what works for me and what doesn’t. So as well as being a cynical journalist these two pairs of Rohan trousers had a lot to live up to. Having said that, I have Rohan trousers that I bought years and years ago and they are still going strong and without  looking shabby either. So it is easy for me to understand why Rohan have been able to build up such an impressive reputation for quality, practical clothing since they first started trading in 1972. Another huge plus point for me is that the company also offer free UK returns, so there really is no reason not to give these a try.

The Roamers have the same excellent fit and comfort that their  original classic ones have always had, but these have just a few thoughtful changes giving a more cleaner look and makes these superb walking trousers even better. Actually I didn’t think that was possible but Rohan have proved me wrong – they have!

Made with Rohan’s MultiFlex Light two way stretch fabric, these  Roamers are still their most comfortable walking trousers, made from the same sophisticated blend of polyamide and elastane so they are tough, stretchy, wind-resistant and light to wear and to pack. They have the Dynamic Moisture Control which gives high-wicking breathability and there’s also an internal elasticated waist to make sure you are as comfortable as possible.

On face value, I feel these are a rather understated pair of trousers when you are aware of how much thought and detail has gone into making them. I loved how Rohan have removed the knee seam from their old design and have softened the edges of the pockets, giving a much more cleaner look. Security pockets are important for me, even though I’m not on safari or climbing mountains, the thought of losing my car keys whilst dog walking fills me with dread, but when away from home, losing car hire keys, your passport, your phone or purse is too scary for words. So that’s another plus point for Rohan as they understand the problems we might have and so design their pockets to be secure – as I say practical clothing from a professional brand.

If you go for tough treks, the Roamers will be perfect, but if like me it is just endless dog walking, gardening or lunches out at the pub, they still fit that exceptionally well.

But the attention to features don’t stop there as Rohan have adjusted the belt loops so you can use a wider belt, plus there’s that important zipped security pocket that they’ve hidden within the front pocket so it is easier to access. Then to keep your Roamers looking their best, Rohan have added anti-scuff tape to the hem to reduce wear and tear on tough treks, but still a bonus for me when I’m dog walking though the sand hills to get to one of my favourite Welsh beaches.

I love the comfort that these versatile trousers offer and I wear these regularly from spring right through to autumn. But it is worth remembering that if you’re wearing them in the high summer, that these trousers give you UPF 40+ Sun Protection*.

*A Note on Sun Protection

All Rohan garments carrying our sun protection icon have been tested in accordance with recognised international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection. Garments are awarded a rating of UPF 40+. Protection may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet. Any associated UV risks will vary according to individual skin type or medical history. Rohan were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

The fabric is 94% Polyamide, 6% Elastane and are lightweight at 285g with a pack size of 500ml. This is useful whether you are packing a rucksack or into your hand luggage to take a trip abroad. These trousers dry quickly in about 3 hours, which is useful if like me you are prone to getting caught in Welsh rain storms. The trousers are an easy wash and rarely need ironing, another huge bonus!

These are not cheap trousers, but on a value-for-money basis I rate them so highly. As I say, I’ve had pairs for years so that gives me confidence to keep purchasing them.

Rohan Women's Riviera Lightweight Stretch Trousers

Women’s Riviera Lightweight Stretch Trousers

Incredibly comfortable trousers, that are practical, functional with stretch to allow you to move freely whether you are a serious hiker, or more like me an active dog walker.

They are lightweight at just 295g and have a pack size of 850ml. As Rohan are experts at crafting and making active clothing, they always select fabric that dries quickly, in this pair 3 hours. So it doesn’t matter if you are caught in a sudden downpour because that is a very fast drying time. The Riviera are easy to wash and rarely need ironing so you can wash overnight which can easily reduce the amount you have to pack.

Rohan give lots of thought on pockets and also design them deeper, with zipped and securely hide them, all important details wherever you are wearing them.

If you like me are always getting ‘eaten’ by insects you’ll appreciate Rohan’s Insect Shield® technology that converts clothing into convenient, comfortable and effective protection against biting insects. Each garment is treated with permethrin – an invisible and odourless ingredient that helps protect against insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. A friend of mine reckons these trousers will be great to wear if you are flying long haul as they offer you so much comfort as the fabric is so light and stretchy. This lightweight of stretch trousers are really amazing and well worth trying a pair.

We prefer to develop long-term relationships with all our suppliers based on mutual trust and a close working relationship to produce garments, which meet our standards. We have a small supply base of 25 trusted, long-term supplier partners based in Portugal, Northern Ireland, China and Vietnam. No matter where our suppliers are based, the same process is followed and the same standards and expectations are set.

The Right Principles

The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) brings corporations, trade unions and voluntary sector members together in a unique alliance that enables us to collectively discuss and tackle a diverse range of difficult issues. As a committed ETI member since 2005, Rohan shares their vision of a world where global employees enjoy working conditions that offer freedom, security and equality.

We have adopted the ETI Base Code and use this to frame discussions with our suppliers, alongside our knowledge and understanding of local laws and customs.  The ETI code outlines the nine essential principles for the promotion of international labour rights, and forms the basis of our performance development work, both for suppliers and Rohan.
