150th Birthday Display Success as Llanfyllin Show Defies the Weather

A special display of memorabilia arranged to mark the 150th birthday of Llanfyllin Show last Saturday proved to be a great success.

There was so much interest in the popular display that the show committee has arranged a coffee morning at Llanfyllin Institute on Saturday, September 14 from 10am to 1pm to allow more people to see it.

Included in the items loaned by supporters for the display were show schedules dating back to the early 1900s, old show posters (View full poster), lots of old photographs and newspaper cuttings and artefacts.

“The display attracted many people throughout the day and there was so much interest that some were unable to see it,” said Dyfrig Jones, show chairman. “We have therefore decided to hold a coffee morning on September 14 to provide another opportunity for people to see the display and fundraise at the same time.”

The show committee has also decided to print tea towels with the design of an original show poster from 1914, which was dated two weeks before the outbreak of the 1st World War.  The tea towels will be launched at the coffee morning.

Despite the stormy weather, the ‘friendly show’ was declared a success, with a record 1,100 entries in the horticulture, floral art, cookery and crafts sections and 400 in the sheep section.

“It was a shame about the weather, but it was still a wonderful 150th show and I would like to thank the competitors, sponsors, exhibitors, spectators and stewards for coming,” said Mr Jones.

Television cameras from S4C’s Ffermio farming programme were there to capture the 150th birthday show, which has been held every year apart from during the two World Wars and during Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks. The programme will be aired at the end of August.

Good Samaritans from Llansantffraid came to the rescue of one of the event’s main attractions, a donkey derby. A vehicle carrying the donkeys broke down in Llansantffraid, so a vehicle was quickly arranged to transport the animals and the owner to Llanfyllin.

The show was held at Bodfach Park by kind permission of Simon and Maggie Baynes together with Janet Jones, this year’s president. Main show sponsor was Ridgway Rentals of St Martins, Oswestry.

Star attraction was the Broke FMX Stunt Display Team which gave two electrifying displays of freestyle motocross and acrobatic stunts.

Another show highlight was the sheep shearing competition, which brought together some of the best sheep shearers from across Wales, including new world champion Richard Jones from Corwen, who went home with the cup.

Successful national horticultural exhibitor Andrew Jones from Maesbrook chose to attend the show for the first time in 25 years and collected two cups for the most points in the open horticultural sections and for best onion exhibit.

Returning show favourites included Porthywaen Silver Band, a Village Green, a vintage machinery display, a fun fair, children’s activities and a good selection of trade stands. There are also classes for horses, sheepdog trials and dogs.
