Creating Wildflower Spaces with Meadow Creations is so seasonal and Welsh Country looks at their autumnal season.
It was back in August that the first signs of autumn arrived shown with the wonder of nature.
As we proceed though autumn 2024 it has been mild but incredibly wet with not many consecutive days being dry. So seeding a field belonging to Ysgol Gymunedol in Pembrokeshire was difficult for Meadow Creations.
Creating wildflower spaces with Meadow Creations stays around schools, this time at the Red Hill Montessori Preparatory School in Haverfordwest. One of the traditional ways of reseeding ground is by using seeded hay that contains the species that is required. One can never seed all the species from the year or even season so this hay lacked the early seeded flowers but did have things like birdsfoot trefoil, vetch and scabious. Patience is the next procedure, waiting to see what grows next spring. What a wonderful experience to teach the children rather than them expecting instant answers from their screens. But what a lesson spreading the hay across the ground, getting dirty but learning how nature works from a very practical point of view.
To demonstrate this passage of time visiting Meadow Street Community Woodland and Garden in Pontypridd shows what evolves over the seasons and shows that time for some is long but with nature just a blip. It was two years since Creating Wildflower Spaces with Meadow Creations when work was done specifically laying wildflower and species rich turf on what was a derelict site where little to nothing grew apart from brambles. It is amazing to see how this now thrives as a place to be of huge benefit to all those that visit either to relax or volunteer.
Hedgebanks have become a feature of Meadow Creations and this particular project just demonstrates that techniques that are hundreds’ of years old can be adapted to accommodate and work with the most modern of technology. A job that at times proved difficult, creating the space within the hedgebank for the ducting and the uprights. But with this superb achievement, one has to ask is this the very first EV charging Pembrokeshire hedgebank?

Another project when one is creating wildflower spaces with Meadow Creations and again not exactly mixing but certainly putting the old traditional techniques right up against the modern developments of today. This lucky new housing development does not have that horrid plastic fencing creating barriers but new Pembrokeshire hedgebanks. Yes they will need some maintenance but in ten years’ time will not need replacing. Indeed in ten years’ time with a little care they will provide a glorious green feature adding to the development rather than tatty plastic fencing that is falling apart not doing its job and not at all environmentally friendly.

As in nature and the environment things are so recurrent be that over the season or even within a single season. What started in the very early autumn the continual rain creating incredible dampness and slippery conditions under foot recurs again. Work still needs to be done and as in all land working machinery can so easily compact the soil creating so many long term problems. Add to that cutting wet vegetation can be a disaster. Bring on the Meadow Creations new Rytec flail, flailing longer grass preparing the swards for winter, spring renewal and growth.
Anything that involves working with the land and nature looks so easy but takes incredible skills and tenacity and so this autumn has proved when creating wildflower spaces with Meadow Creations.
