As the festive season brings people together, Heolddu Comprehensive in Bargoed, Caerphilly, has truly exemplified the spirit of giving. In a community where 38% of pupils qualify for free school meals, the school has taken remarkable steps to combat food poverty and provide support to local families through its Christmas Hamper Appeal.
With the extraordinary backing of local businesses, community groups, and kind-hearted individuals, this initiative has been a resounding success. Over 30 families have received hampers packed with essentials, spreading warmth and joy during a time that can be challenging for many.
Miss Probert, the school’s Community Lead, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming generosity shown.
“The kindness we’ve experienced has been truly phenomenal,” she shared. “It’s inspiring to see how our community has come together to support one another.” A particular thanks to Bargoed Masons, Caerphilly North NPT, Citizens Advice, Caerphilly Cares, Morrisons, Gilfach and Park Primary and the students, parents, and Governors of Heolddu.”
Encouraged by this year’s success, Miss Probert is already planning the next phase of community support. Her vision for the New Year is ambitious yet rooted in hope: the establishment of a community pantry. This pantry would operate on a “pay what you can afford” basis, providing families and individuals with access to food and toiletry essentials during tough times.
To make this dream a reality, Miss Probert is calling on local businesses, organisations, and individuals to lend their support. Donations of food, toiletries, or financial assistance will be critical to launching and sustaining this initiative, which has the potential to make a profound impact on the lives of many.
How You Can Help? If you or your organisation would like to be part of this vital community effort, please reach out to Miss Probert directly. You can contact her by calling Heolddu Comprehensive School on 01443 875531 or emailing fprobert@heolddu.org
