Cardigan Bay Brownies shop is an independent star on the High Street of Cardigan town in South West Wales. With an assortment of delicious bakes and sweet treats plus the most wonderful selection of breads. But so good are the brownies, occasion cakes and Rocky Roads that you can also buy them by mail order.
Nerys Harries is the proud owner of this emporium and the short but important history of this business is best said in her own words.
My love of baking began at a very young age. Preparing indulgent treats using simple easily adaptable ingredients can always enhance your day. Baking is in my blood, influenced by my ‘Mam’ – Marion Wheeler, my Grandmother and my father, ‘Oz’.
Mam was always producing amazing cakes and baked creations. I lingered in the background in her small kitchen, ready with a helping hand to mix, pour and most importantly, taste her masterpieces! She was a genius and had a massive impact on my baking life. My father was a cook, with his own canteen, he fed up to 300 workers per day in the old jeans factory by Theatr Mwldan in my home town of Cardigan. Between Mam and father, it’s safe to say I had a good start in the world of baking!
In 2011 I began ‘dreaming’ of my baking passion becoming my career. I plucked up the courage to ask for a stall in Cardigan indoor market and called my little venture, ‘Cariad Cupcakes’. Literally, selling ‘like hot cakes’ every Thursday my cupcakes flew to an army of buttercream and Victoria sponge fans. But with a young family in tow, I took a break. With time to think, my ‘Eureka’ moment was when I realised I was regularly asked for my brownies, getting back to my baking fix, Cardigan Bay Brownies was born!
With the boom in social media, I created a Facebook and Instagram page (with difficulty!). I advertised where my slices of chocolate heaven would be sold and I began to attract a local following. Selling from an outdoor market stall at the Guildhall in Cardigan twice a week, my chocolate brownie following grew – I was baking full time
With Cardigan Bay Brownies becoming a busy full-time business, attending food festivals and Christmas market events, it was time to find permanent premises! On March 16th 2019, I took the plunge, with my shop – slap bang in the middle of my home town on Cardigan High Street! A fun and vibrant workspace where my creativity can be explored using local produce the best chocolate brownies – now posted worldwide from my pretty home town in Wales.
My experimental approach in the kitchen had a solid foundation with my family influences mixed in. My chocolate brownies, blondies and cookie cups flavours change on a daily basis, exploring new flavours that reflect the seasons plus finding new tastes keeps me and my hardworking staff on our toes!
