Wildflowers and the many diverse benefits of their flowering are nurtured and encouraged by the work done by Meadow Creations in various places over the past months and year.
Firstly we look at a churchyard started at the end of 2020 this project will enjoy the last of the colour before the Autumn cut.
Although creating wilder areas in rural spaces Meadow Creations also works in more urban areas. Here we see them marking out an area to establish a swath of wildflowers along this avenue of trees in Newbury. Public interest and support for the installation was overwhelming whilst on site.
Trevor from Meadow Creations commented:
“Working with wildflower pastures and seed mixes means we see the most diverse wildlife such as this Common Blue butterfly looking stunning. I spotted it whilst cutting this meadow. We will see what comes up in the spring as it has not been managed since it was sown 2 years ago.”
It is never too late to recreate wonderful wildlife and wildflower habitat. Neglected Meadow coming back to life. The area was cleared of bramble after many years to reveal a host of Wildflowers including Meadowsweet, Ragged Robin, Birdsfoot trefoil now on a cut and remove and clear other parts of the meadow keeping an eye out for granite rocks as we go and now also the common lizard!
Trevor tells Welsh Country that although wildlife thoroughfares are essential islands of wildlife / wildflower habitats have their place:
“We finished finally installing the wildflower islands after a delay in haulage caused by the “pingdemic”.
All prepped to install “islands” of Wildflowers in this paddock tomorrow and maybe a paddle in the sea if we get finished!”
Going back to a more urban environment Meadow Creations have been busy preparing multiple sites across an area of Swansea, in preparation for the installation of Wildflower Turf. Enhancing and utilising those areas currently of little biodiverse value. The border of the existing grass is being left to give an indication that the areas will still be managed and these will be mown on a regular basis.
Back in July we posted on Welsh Country’s Facebook page:
“Meadow Creations create a roof on the floor! Being asked to create a wildflower meadow on a playground but not being allowed to dig the playground up they were left with little choice but treat it like a green roof shallow soil on top of a hard impenetrable surface.
On another occasion, what a bee beautiful sight from a community garden wildflower area only established late March using seed donated by Keep Wales Tidy Pembs plenty of Borage and lots of Cornflowers to follow. Meadow Creations as ever provide wonderful colourful insect friendly spaces”
Playground now in flower The Wildflower seed which was sown on July 5th on an old school playground has established really well considering we were not allowed to break up the tarmac! We will leave it as long as we can until the weather breaks before we cut it back and will look forward to next spring.
