In the Welsh Wind Distillery

In the Welsh Wind Distillery was founded in January 2018 and can be found in the former Gogerddan Arms pub at Tanygroes, an important crossroads on the main A487 coast road joining Aberystwyth to Cardigan, and Carmarthen to the sea. It’s here that the team produce premium and award-winning Welsh gin, vodka and rum for their own brands, as well as for other brands and businesses. The distillery is also pioneering a truly Welsh single malt whisky – their contribution to the Welsh whisky renaissance. Underpinning all they do is their desire to produce premium quality spirits that tell a story.

The west Wales distillery initially specialised in developing and contract distilling spirits for other businesses and brands. The team now works with clients across Wales and as far afield as Japan, producing unique and exceptional spirits, and offering consultancy on branding and production solutions.

In the Welsh Wind released its first gin under the ‘In the Welsh Wind’ brand in July 2020. Signature Style is inspired by cargoes imported into the ports of west Wales in the 19th century. At 43%, it is smooth and oil rich – and won a gold medal at the Gin Masters 2021. The distillery released a limited edition, cask-aged version of Signature Style in Spring 2021. Rested in Palo Cortado sherry casks for 5-6 months, this gin has a beautiful golden glow, as well as additional flavours from the cask. It received the prestigious ‘Master’ medal at Gin Masters 2021 – one of only 2 gins in its category to achieve this accolade. The third permanent bottle in the range is Three Grain Vodka – barley and rye malted and distilled on site and blended with a white spirit, Thiree Grain Vodka joined the shelves in November 2022.

The distillery is pioneering a grain to glass single malt Welsh whisky. Barley from fields local to the distillery is malted on site (rather than being transported to malt houses in England) and is then processed into new make spirit, ready to mature in casks at the distillery and become whisky. To improve the sustainability of the finished product, the malt is not kiln dried – so this whisky is made using ‘green malt’ which lets the flavour of the barley shine through.

Open to visitors Monday – Saturday 9-5, with a shop and free samples available to the public, those who want to deepen their knowledge of spirits can book a Gin Making or Gin Tasting experience at the distillery.
