Charities and not-for-profit groups across Powys and Wrexham will soon be able to apply for support from Hafren Dyfrdwy’s Community Fund, as applications reopen this autumn.
The annual Fund, which has £60,000 available a year to help organisations within its region that are providing vital community services, opened again on, Wednesday 23rd September.
With many charities facing challenges as they continue to manage rising costs and increasing demand, the Fund offers grants for essential core costs, including rent, utilities, staff costs and administration, to help groups keep their vital support in place for local people.
Eligible organisations can apply for a grant of £2,000 to £10,000 for one year, to help cover their day to day running costs and ensure continued support for those who need it most.
Organisations supported previously include food banks, community hubs, debt advice, family support services, and groups supporting older people or those in vulnerable circumstances.
One such organisation was Newtown Community Café, a volunteer-run community café that provides affordable hot meals and vital social support to dozens of people every week. They were awarded £2,600 from the fund to help cover its rent for 12 months, ensuring it can continue providing a warm, welcoming space for local people.
Run entirely by volunteers, the not-for-profit supports between 60 and 70 people each week through its Wednesday and Thursday sessions. Operating on a pay-as-you-can basis, it offers affordable home-cooked meals while helping tackle loneliness and isolation within the community.
The cafe works closely with local healthcare groups and councillors who refer people in need and volunteers also deliver meals directly to residents who are unable to attend in person, helping ensure support reaches some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

“We know that covering running costs can be one of the biggest challenges for organisations like Newtown Community Café, but covering those costs is key for services to be able to continue supporting the people who rely on them.
“This funding is about helping organisations build confidence, maintain their services and continue making a positive difference in their local communities.”
Applications for this year’s Community Fund are now open. Applications will close once the available funding has been awarded, so organisations are encouraged to apply promptly to give them the best chance of being considered while funding remains available.
