Crafty Skills of Furniture Making Course on Show

On display this month at the Corn Exchange in the centre of Cardigan will be Coleg Ceredigion’s annual furniture exhibition.

The college will be showcasing a variety of skills and designs by their level two and three students.

The public can expect to see a range of furniture and accessories from tables to spinning wheels, combining both traditional and contemporary styles.

All pieces are handmade with a blend of hand tools and machinery in the workshop.

Some students have adopted more complex woodworking techniques including steam bending, lamination, CNC routing and laser cutting into their design, utilising the facilities on offer at Coleg Ceredigion.

Chloe Reynolds, lead lecturer at Coleg Ceredigion said:

“This year has been a little different as we are working with a new awarding body, The University of the Arts London, so you may find the work a little more curious and adventurous in parts.”

Sustainability is a core part of the course and this year students have gone a step further by calculating carbon footprints and reducing wood waste.

On show will be a range of smaller items made from offcuts that would otherwise be headed for the fire. Students source all their woods as locally as possible and try to support local businesses. All of their native hardwoods are sourced though Coed y Cardi in Talgarreg who also demonstrate to the students how the timber is milled.

The exhibition will run from Tuesday, June 20, to Saturday, June 24 and some of the work is available to purchase.

For anyone thinking about learning the craft of furniture making, this exhibition may be a good opportunity to find out more about developing or learning a new set of skills.
