Surplus Food Wanted, Cooked and Awarded

Surplus Food wanted, cooked and awarded a mantra that could be applied to FareShare Cymru.

With winter around the corner and Christmas that can be so decisive between those that have and those that don’t, FareShare Cymru works to level that disparity. They are presently in need of more ambient collection points from businesses, not necessarily food businesses for non-perishable goods like pasta/cereals/tinned goods etc.

Surplus food can happen for many reasons; for example, over-supplied, over-ordered, obsolete seasonal stock, off-specification, packaging issues, and production trials. By diverting this surplus stock to FareShare Cymru, you will be helping hundreds of charities across Wales. To do so contact fareshare.cymru/donate-food/.

Often food donated to FareShare Cymru cannot be used directly by families and they tell Welsh Country about one solution they have for this surplus food.

“Over the last few months, we’ve been working on an exciting new project: pop-up kitchens. Now more than ever, a lot of the food we’ve been receiving is more suited to catering meaning it requires more preparation and cooking to turn it into nutritional meals. For us, this posed a few problems: not all the projects we support have access to a working kitchen and the volunteers who run the projects may not know how to use the catering-style food they receive. Thankfully, however, we were able to offer a solution…

“With the help of Welsh government funding, we were able to purchase 12 fully equipped “pop-up” kitchens, which will be donated to our community food members. Those who receive the kitchens will be committed to running a cooking project which will benefit vulnerable members of the community. These projects could include cooking meals for the vulnerable in the community, hosting cooking demonstrations, providing healthy eating classes, or cooking meals for charity events to raise money for their charities. We look forward to catching up with those who are receiving pop-up kitchens in the coming months to hear all about their new projects and the difference they are making!”

This wonderful work of making the best of surplus foods and working with other charities such as Ystradowen Community Centre as told within www.welshcountry.co.uk/fareshare-cymru-support-ystradowen-community-centre-cgycc/  is acknowledged more widely within the charity world and FareShare Cymru has been nominated as a finalist in the Welsh Charity Awards 2024 for the second year running!

FareShare Cymru commented:

“This year, a record number of nominations were received so we’re delighted to have been selected as a finalist. The nomination reflects the tireless work of our amazing volunteers and staff, who drive the cause and allow us to continue to tackle food waste and fight hunger in Wales. Redistributing surplus food from the food industry to charities and community groups helps to build people up whilst simultaneously preventing tons of food from going to landfill. What we do is so important in supporting our environment and our communities here in Wales.

“ We look forward to celebrating with all the other finalists at the ceremony on 25th November – wish us luck!”
