Wave Painting by Artist Sarah Jane Brown Selected for Prestigious Marine Art Exhibition

An atmospheric oil painting of a wave by contemporary Welsh landscape artist Sarah Jane Brown has been selected to feature at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition in Mall Galleries, London. The exhibition is open to the public from 21st to 30th September 2023 and will be available to preview online from Thursday 31st August.

Living and working in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Sarah Jane draws widely on the breathtakingly wild beauty of her coastal surroundings to create emotionally charged and thought-provoking oil paintings.

“Getting outside gives us a different perspective”, says Sarah Jane. “Science can even prove that shifting our focus to a panoramic view or looking towards the horizon has a calming effect on our brains and even our physiology. Even a simple gaze up at the sky offers us a momentary experience of infinity! It is exciting that my painting ‘A clear direction’ has been selected for this year’s Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition, and I look forward to seeing it on display and sharing that sense of perspective at the Mall Galleries.”

The Royal Society of Marine Artists was founded in 1939 as the Society of Marine Artists. In 1966 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted it the title Royal Society of Marine Artists, and early members included Charles Pears, Montague Dawson, Claude Muncaster, Norman Wilkinson, Rowland Hilder and Edward Wesson, all eminent artists in their day and whose work is held in major national collections. Many of the current members are equally eminent in their field and their work will be valued and appreciated for generations to come.

Now in its 78th year, this exhibition is a showcase for the best in contemporary marine art, whether that is painting, drawing, printmaking, or sculpture, and as such the exhibition.

celebrates a diversity of approaches as well as subject matter. You can expect to see over 300 works for sale, including paintings and sculptures. There will be workshops and demonstrations held by Society members to share their knowledge and techniques, and a team of dedicated professionals to help and advise with your purchase if required.

Sarah Jane studied Fine Art Painting at the West Wales School of the Arts. Since graduating with a first-class honours degree, her career as a professional artist has steadily gained momentum and recognition. In 2020 Sarah Jane was awarded full membership to the Guild Society of Artists, part of the Fine Art Trade Guild, and the right to use the ‘GSA’ post-nominal letters. The award acknowledges the consistently high standard of her work, as well as her professionalism and business ethics. She has exhibited widely across the UK, including at London’s Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Cambrian Academy in North Wales, enjoying multiple solo shows and overseas exhibitions. Her work is collected internationally.

Another painting by Sarah Jane has reached the finals in Art Unlimited’s Open Art Competition 2023 in Bridport. The award

ceremony takes place on the 15th of September, and you can view Sarah Jane’s painting ‘On the reef’ at the Open Art Exhibition from the 16th to the 27th of September.

Current work can be seen at her Open Studio event for the North Pembrokeshire Open Studios 2023 Art Trail until 2nd September, and also at Art Exhibition @ Haverhub at The Old Post Office, Haverfordwest that celebrates North Pembrokeshire Open Studios artists, open until 30th September. Sarah Jane will also participate in the online exhibition Square Foot Show from the 5th to the 7th of October. Sarah Jane is represented by Etcetera Gallery in St Davids, Pembrokeshire, and Art Unlimited in Bridport, Dorset.
