Townhouse by Hive, Aberaeron is described by The Times as a “Scandi Chic Hotel”. One cannot argue with that but it is very much a boutique place to stay only having six rooms but all ooze quality.
Aberaeron is now a very Insta worthy destination. The harbour which was initially completed in 1807, is indeed justifiably given its popular moniker of “the jewel of Cardigan Bay” and remains a favourite place to visit for people from all around Wales, Britain and further afield.
“… Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne, Clerk Lord of the said Manor of Llyswen, otherwise Aberayron, is willing and desirous at his own Expense, to rebuild, enlarge, improve and maintain the said Quay or Pier, and also to improve the said Harbour”
Above is an extract from a Special Act of Parliament dating from 28 July 1807 which gave life to Aberaeron harbour and town, thanks to the vision of Reverend Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne, Lord of the Manor of Aberaeron. Ship building and the trade via the harbour flourished for more than 100 years until the railway came. But the harbour and environs have over the last couple of years had another major construction project that of flood defenses.

We digress but such is the interest of this west Wales town.
For over a decade The Hive Bar and Kitchen, owned by brothers Rhys and Rhodri, boasts one of the very best locations on the quayside, and some of the very best honey ice cream in Wales. Now they also offer the Townhouse by Hive
The Hive Bar and Kitchen just over the road from the Townhouse is where breakfast is served. But the stylish renovation of an historic building, previously a solicitors office, is the three-storey corner plot of the brand new Townhouse. With six modern suites with double aspect views over the waterfront, it has the quietly opulent atmosphere alongside a seaside Scandinavian vibe, where traditional Georgian style and on-trend luxury go hand in hand. Original exposed stone walls work with the luxe velvet headboards, marble bathroom vanity units seem to sit well with contemporary art from local artist, Lola Chapman.
All six rooms make the most of the calming coastal light, using soft shade and high-end fabrics to reflect the colours off the water. Vulcan, in common with all the rooms, named with a nod to the town’s maritime and shipbuilding past, is on the top floor. This corner suite is a showstopper, a stunning copper roll top bath tub with harbour views is a centrepiece, but there’s also a separate monsoon shower in the quirky en-suite. A combination of a dreamy king size bed, hand-made furniture, and a complimentary mini-bar that boasts some of the legendary ice cream, make this a space that’s hard to leave.
For that special treat, try and book Cadwgan on the ground floor. The rich green velvety textures coupled with some clever indirect lighting add warmth to the exposed stone and compliment the slate of the toasty fireplace.
The Times as part of their review demonstrates what could be called The Townhouse by Hive quirkiness.
“There isn’t even a reception — check-in is over the road at Hive — but zapping a QR code opens a welcome guide and a selection of local interest books are on the landings. Surprisingly there’s access to a gym, thanks to a partnership with the local SE Fitness: guests get a key fob enabling 24-hour access to the well-kitted space a ten-minute walk away. The Townhouse has no designated parking but nearby Market Street car park is free.”
But the comments on Trip Advisor show that no reception isn’t an issue.
Hive Townhouse is beyond excellent.
“Everything about Hive Townhouse screams quality. Check in is simple and helpful, rooms are stunning, clean and so comfortable. Showers brilliant. One of the best places I’ve stayed in last 12 months. Complimentary drinks are the cherry on the top!”
And from Trip Advisor earlier in 2026…
“We absolutely loved staying at The Hive Townhouse this week for 2 nights. The rooms are stylishly decorated with lots of thoughtful additions including luxurious toiletries, a well stocked (complimentary) mini bar with snacks, and handy things like a hand held clothes steamer and multi-way charging cable. We stayed in ‘Portland’, a top floor room.
Breakfast is served in the Hive restaurant just across the road, and oh my goodness what a delicious feast we had. One of the best breakfasts we’ve had at a small hotel in the UK.“Also, I have to mention the absolutely delicious complimentary Hive ice cream serving that we had with a coffee in the restaurant, sat by the roaring fire on a wintery February day! Who knew we needed ice cream in Feb!!
“Aberaeron town itself is worth a visit and when we come back, The Townhouse is definitely where we will stay!”
