The Herring Gull

Not easy being raised by the sea.
What is for tea?

Not guaranteed to have
Fish and chips every day.

Unless- someone like me:
Tips their dish.

In kindness.

Life is dependant on
The sea-

And sometimes me.

My pet gull- Sammy
Lives here with me.

Not by the sea-
But on my chimney pot-

And on my barn roof.

Then tip toes
And slip slides

Like a novice surfer.

Down the rafters.
To have tea with me.

I’ve named him Sammy
As his predecessor was Sam.

Sammy is slow but keen to learn.
He’s tried prawns.

And now swallows them whole.

He’s a baby.  New to most foods.
I think he is lost.

Or abandoned from home.

He circles the house and flies
Right back in.

Like a bird of pray.

He’s keen to learn.
And I’m eager to train.

He tips his head when I call his name.

I hope that Sammy will stay with me
But I also want him to hopefully be-

One day-

With another gull that loves him-
As much as me.
