St David’s Day Celebrated with a Collaborative Cultural Evening at the Llanfyllin Workhouse

filler

St David’s Day—and all things Cymru—was celebrated in style at the Llanfyllin workhouse (Y Dolydd) on Tuesday evening, March 1st.

Local artists, musicians and poets created unique pieces to inspire and entertain the audience.

The event was opened by Llanfyllin Town Mayor, Councillor Peter Lewis. The Mayor reflected on the rich traditions and cultural diversity of the area, noting that the Llanfyllin Workhouse provides an exciting venue for supporting and developing creativity.

Seven local artists exhibited a variety of contemporary and traditional artworks. The artwork ranged from large canvasses in oils to wood engravings and watercolours.

Poetry readings in both Welsh and English opened the evening’s entertainment. There followed an inventive choral session from the Vivace Choir—an energetic set that had the audience spontaneously joining in.

Café Lola followed with an eclectic mix of jazz, folk and a cross-cultural musical set. The evening was rounded off with some rousing Welsh folk music from Teulu.

Home-cooked food was on hand and the launch of ‘Workhouse Lager’ from local craft brewer Bragdy Tanat ensured the bar was as busy as ever.

Organiser Dan Llywelyn Hall, one of the exhibiting artists, felt the evening illustrated the current rich vein of local talent and the unique opportunity the venue offers. He commented:

“Tonight’s St David’s Day celebration was a success on two levels: the opportunity for local artists, poets and musicians to collaborate and display their talent, and also the huge potential for the Llanfyllin Workhouse to become a vibrant, cultural hub for Mid Wales and the rest of the UK.”
