David Lloyd George

Above the knife-cut nerve-ends exiting cries
when waiting screech and burst of the shells:
above the brittle silence shouted through void,
sick, unemployed long trapped in their hells:
rose high the hope-cloud words
from David George
with pouring urge –
men must win war, men must change world.

Exchequer minister taxing the rich
begun advance to welfare of state:
prime minister as leader in war
removed destructive millions’ fate:
for party left well riven,
non-power bleakness:
for moral weakness:
Lloyd George is long forgiven,

great man of Wales, though English birth,
of Celtic tongue, and heart, and earth.
