For the Love of the Land – Compiled by Jenny Jefferies

I normally by-pass forwards if I can get away with it, but the forward in this book, written by Minette Batters, President Of The National Farmers Union. This hit home to me with her saying there was a closer link now between farmers, chefs and the public and how great it was to see more and more chefs championing local ingredients and really showcasing the food we’re producing on home soil. But that means nothing without a prosperous farming sector – and you know what they say: behind every great British ingredient is a great British farmer!

This is rather a different cook book as it aims to bridge the gap between city and country, food and technology, to educate and inform, to connect and entertain and to share the dedication of those who produce our food, all in the words of the farmers themselves. You can share with them that farming is far from just glory but actual hardship and a real labour of love to work the land and raise livestock.

Delve into the cook book and as you turn the pages and you will see that you are taken on a fascinating journey through the British Isles and don’t worry Wales has not been forgotten! I would have loved to see more stories from our Welsh farmers but do look out for Graig Farm Organics based in Montgomeryshire and in north Wales, Tyn Llwyfan Farm. I think though the message, wherever you live, is to please support our farmers and make sure you visit farm shops, local produce markets and food festivals

This is a lovely book to curl up with by a roaring log fire. I’m sure you will, as I have done is to mark off pages of recipes that I am sure will be eaten and loved by my family. With lovely photography that is bound to encourage you to try something different. With such a great variety of recipes from soup, meats, fry bread, rock cakes, shortbread to one I can’t forget, tipsy fool!

This would make a great Christmas or birthday gift.
