Andrew Rees celebrates the fact that the Countryside Alliance have been running their awards for the last ten years and this year (2015) decided that they needed to celebrate this fact in creating Champions of Champions.
Back in 2007 Narberth Butchers Andrew Rees and Sons Ltd won the Best Rural Retailer award for both Wales and the UK. The awards are organised by the Countryside Alliance and celebrate the best of traditional local food and crafts throughout the UK.
To celebrate 10 years of these awards, a Champion of Champions was being held. As a past winner, Andrew has been nominated for both UK Traditional Retailer and Welsh Champion of Champions.
At the award ceremony held at the Welsh Assembly buildings Rachel Evans of the Countryside Alliance commented:
“The citation for this award could be for any one of our finalists in this category. The Champion of Champions (Traditional Business) award goes to first and foremost an outstanding butcher, passionate about supporting the local farming community and ensuring customers have the absolute best quality meat with low food miles. He is also at the heart of this market town’s life and is, as the Telegraph said when he first won, “prepared to trudge that extra wet Welsh mile” for his customers. His support for local food producers, schools, charities and his commitment to sustaining rural community life makes him a worthy winner. Voted in by his customers from far and wide, the winner is Andrew J Rees & Sons of Narberth.”
The award was presented by regional Assembly Member William Powell.
