It’s been all change at Wrexham since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the club. And everyone seems to be loving life with the American duo in charge. The team are currently top of the National League and vying to make it back to the Football League. If they do so, it will be a summer of celebrations and said celebrations could even continue stateside.
The reason why Wrexham could well be celebrating in the US over the summer is that it has been announced this will be the destination for their pre-season training camp. While many may have expected this to be the case because of how influential and hands-on Reynolds and McElhenney are, things have now been confirmed via an official statement, which is sure to excite Wrexham fans.
The reports stated that McElhenney has “confirmed that the club will take an American tour in 2023.” It goes on to suggest that during the tour, Wrexham will face off against a handful of MLS teams. While most football teams enjoy pre-season away from their base, heading stateside shows the ambition of both McElhenney and Reynolds. They dream of one day getting Wrexham back to the Premier League, which will see the club have more TV coverage, and they’re doing everything in their power to make it happen.
Since taking over the club in February 2021, not only has a lot of money been invested by the ownership duo, but there has also been a lot of work done on the commercial side, with a serious endeavour to raise the Wrexham AFC’s profile. Just the two Americans taking over has been huge on this front, and there has since been the documentary launched on Amazon Prime, too, taking the viewers behind the scenes, again raising the profile and also bringing extra cash into the club as a result.
A pre-season trip to the US will again go towards enhancing the commercial operation at Wrexham, raising their profile and motivating the players ahead of what will undoubtedly be another gruelling season. The Premier League is incredibly popular in the US, more so than the MLS in some respects. The love of the sport is underlined in the growing level of betting activity seen by established online sports betting sites in recent years. So, giving locals a chance to watch a team from the UK, one with big ambitions and dreams to play in England’s top flight, a club also owned by two Americans, is going to be huge.
At present, confirmed details of when the trip will take place and who Wrexham will face off against when they’re stateside remain scarce, as the current season still has plenty of games to go, and the club could be promoted into the Football League. However, it’s believed that they will take on Philadelphia Union in their first game. Then there may be fixtures arranged against the likes of LA Galaxy, Austin FC and also David Beckham-owned Inter Miami. Wrexham fans at home will likely not miss out, as games will be streamed live.
