Stone Circle Mead

Stone Circle Mead makes traditional, oak-aged meads at their meadery in Wrexham. Mead, the world’s oldest alcoholic drink, is being patiently recreated in their meadery, applying modern techniques to an age-old process. Stone Circle Mead uses Welsh honey and specialise in medieval-style meads, blending a variety of fruits, flowers, herbs and spices with the honey and cold fermenting them together. The production process takes up to three years, often longer. Wherever possible they forage locally for our extra ingredients, scouring the hedgerows for sloe, bullace, elderberry, elderflower, apple, gorseflower, sweet chestnut, damson, nettle, rosehip, cherry and many more.

Stone Circle Mead supply online, to trade and also in person from their meadery shop. But Stone Circle Mead wants customers to try their delicious meads, so are also kept very busy with popular meadery tasting tours giving their customers an opportunity to find out something of the rich history of mead, see how it’s made today and then enjoy a tasting of our current range of meads.

Stone Circle Mead

As previously said making mead is an age old process and many of its benefits are the subjects of many a folklore handed down generation to generation. But Stone Circle Mead are also busy on the modern research front. Working with Aberystwyth University and AberInnovation to establish what health and wellbeing benefits of various honeys are carried through the fermentation process into finished meads. Preliminary results are very exciting and the full report will be published on the Stone Circle Mead website soon.

The principal mead-maker at Stone Circle Mead is Tony Cornish, who has been making mead since the early 1990s in Llangollen and now in Wrexham.

Stone Circle Mead can be found in many outlets but they are proud to say that they supply the House of Commons shops, the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) building in Cardiff and the National Trust shops in Chirk Castle and Erddig.
