Here are five of the best scenic cycling trails in Wales that will make your future cycling holidays unforgettable.
Harbour to Highlands Trail
This stunning 80-mile trail takes you from Fishguard Harbour deep into the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of lush green valleys and rolling hills, as well as glimpses of rural Welsh villages and historic sites like Carreg Cennen Castle. The route is rated moderate in difficulty and can be completed in around four days, although it can certainly be done in shorter stints if desired.
The Mawddach Trail
Starting at Dolgellau and ending up at Barmouth, this 13-mile trail follows a disused railway line through some of North Wales’s most spectacular scenery. You’ll pass through forests, over rivers and streams, and along the banks of Lake Mawddach—all with stunning views of Snowdonia’s highest peaks looming in the background. This is a relatively easy ride but don’t let that fool you; it’s sure to leave a lasting impression on even the most seasoned cyclists.
Cliff and Castle Trail
If you’re looking for a challenge, then look no further than this 20-mile mountain biking route. The Cliff & Castle Trail starts near Llangollen and follows an old railway line up into Snowdonia National Park before looping back around again towards home. Along the way, you’ll get to take in some incredible views of riverside castles, rolling hillsides, and majestic mountains—all while testing your fitness levels with steep inclines and technical descents.
Swansea Bike Path
This 10-mile bike path is perfect for families who want to explore Swansea Bay without having to worry about traffic or difficult terrain. Starting from Swansea Marina, this flat pathway takes you past golden beaches, salt marshes teeming with wildlife, modern art installations, and more—all before looping back around again towards home. This route is suitable for cyclists aged 8+ so it makes a great day out for all ages.
Heritage Coast Trail
For those looking for an epic adventure on two wheels then look no further than this 80+ mile coastal route from Cardiff to Pembrokeshire National Park via St Davids Cathedral—the smallest city in Britain! Along the way you’ll get to take in some spectacular scenery including rugged cliffs overlooking sandy coves; bustling waterfront towns; ancient monuments; medieval castles; limestone gorges; and more! Although rated difficult due to its length (it should take around 4 days), this ride is definitely worth every bit of effort required.
With hundreds of miles of stunning cycling routes waiting just outside your doorstep (or hotel room!), it’s easy to see why many people are choosing Wales as their destination for cycling holidays these days.
