Welsh Cottage Cakes

Welsh Cottage Cakes create “The Taste of Wales and True Value in Traditional Cakes” from their bakery on the outskirts of Llandeilo. Welsh Cottage Cakes produce an award winning Bara Brith and traditional cakes for good food retailers throughout the Principality.

In their own words Welsh Cottage Cakes say:

“We are committed to providing traditional, quality cakes including our famous Bara Brith, whilst maintaining the very highest standards in food production, for an authentic taste of Wales.

The bakery traces its roots in the rural community of West Wales and is truly founded on original recipes and traditional baking methods, typical of ‘farmhouse’ cooking many years ago. We are a forward-looking company too, and we continue to invest in developing new and innovative cakes and flavour combinations – such as our Sultana, Carrot & Orange Cake developed in-house by Nia Williams as part of her Foundation Degree in Food Science & Technology at Cardiff Metropolitan University, under a sponsorship scheme for those working in the food industry in Wales.

We have now been in business for over 20 years, and continue to grow our market share. In fact, our traditional Welsh Bara Brith is now the best selling Bara Brith in Wales. With an efficient business model, we are able to supply local and National retailers and wholesale distributors with our product range to meet your needs.

Our skilled and dedicated staff are employed from the local community and are fully qualified in Food Hygiene, as well as benefitting from our staff-focussed drive as Investors in People.

In April 2007 Welsh Cottage Cakes moved to our current modern premises in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire. The factory is ideally suited for food production, and is equipped with the latest production and packaging machinery to meet the demands of our local and UK-wide multiple retailers and wholesalers.

Welsh Cottage Cakes is a keen supporter of our local community and take pride in our role as a valued local employer. We are also very proud to have achieved Investors in People accreditation in 2013, and we’re continually building on the skills of our staff at all levels, to exceed the expectation of our business partners and customers alike.

Locally around Llandeilo, we also play an active role in a number of projects, including the ‘Safety Watch supporters club’ and ‘The Children’s Research Fund’. We also sponsor Llandeilo Choir, Llansawel Rugby Club, as well as local agricultural shows and community events.”

Double First For Welsh Cottage Cakes

This cake bakery at Llandeilo is celebrating one of their staff, Nia Williams, becoming one of the first to receive a Foundation Degree in Food Science and Technology at Cardiff Metropolitan University under a sponsorship scheme for those working in the food industry in Wales. The course is now in its third year of intake and has proved an invaluable asset of improvement to food producers such as W.C.C.

Dr. Kay Swinburne, Wales’ M.E.P. calls in at Welsh Cottage Cakes bakery on a recent visit to Llandeilo and receives a Sultana, Orange & Carrot Cake from Nia Williams.

Nia’s final year project was to take a new product through its entire stages of development from idea to launch on the retail market and this she has achieved with the support of her co-workers and suppliers. February, 2014 saw the launch of a fruity and moist Sultana, Orange and Carrot Cake with wide acceptance and appreciation. Nia is pictured above presenting Dr. Kay Swinburne with one of these cakes on a recent visit to Llandeilo.

‘We are very proud of Nia’s achievement after all her hard work and long hours. It is so rewarding so see a tangible benefit to her studies and share in her success. Yet another distinctive cake has been added to our range to compliment our award winning Bara Brith’.

Double Accreditation For Welsh Cottage Cakes

Welsh Cottage Cakes Bakery is celebrating a double success achieved in December with two simultaneous awards. Firstly, the craft bakery at Llandeilo was awarded a SALSA (Small and Local Supplier Approval) Certificate of Accreditation which the staff had worked hard towards over the last year and was finally achieved by audit on the day of their Christmas party, Friday 16th December, 2011.

Earlier that week they had received confirmation from Enterprise Foods that they had also been successfully audited by their technical department and achieved over the required standard to continue supplying the Co-operative Food stores throughout South and Mid Wales as well as the Border Counties. These certificates of audit ensure the high standard of hygiene, staff and products at Welsh Cottage Cakes as well as full traceability of all ingredients and final retail destination of their cakes.

Proprietor, Anthony Frost, warmly commends his staff of local people who are dedicated to their work and high standards of achievement with five members of staff achieving N.V.Q.’s Level 2 qualifications last year through on-site training and their first member of staff, Nia Williams, to have commenced a degree course in Food Technology delivered by Cardiff Metropolitan University.

“It has made us all really proud of each other as well as of our award winning Bara Brith which is continuing to grow in popularity and demand in addition to the whole range of traditional recipe cakes which we have endeavoured to improve and make unique to ourselves. We can now offer an extended range of ten varieties including a cake produced with 100% Spelt flour and our Rich Fruit & Brandy Cake which is so moist and tasty.

“Our aim is to continually improve and offer safe and mouth watering cakes at sensible and affordable prices to all our customers,” says head Baker, Pat Evans.
