Welsh Gluten Free Bakery Products, have upped their production and increased their staff with the help of Cywain which is a project that supports the development of new markets for growth orientated businesses in the agri-food sector.
Says Cywain Development Manager, Nia Môn, “For small companies, expanding and moving premises can be a daunting, but exciting experience and we are delighted to have helped Welsh Gluten Free Bakery Products, grow their markets and customer bases.”
When Joyce Harvey-Dunton was diagnosed as Coeliac, with total wheat intolerance, she found her choice of bakery products to be limited.
So, she and her husband Andrew decided to set-up a bakery – Welsh Gluten Free Bakery Products (WGF) – with Joyce, a trained cook, supplying the hands-on baking experience producing a large range of speciality products which are suitable for Coeliacs.
The Ceredigion business has gone from strength to strength and supplies independent stores and cafes throughout South and West Wales.
Now, having recently taken the big step of moving into new premises, the business looks forward to expanding its customer base to the whole of Wales.
Continually developing new ranges, Joyce has honed her recipes over a number of years, perfecting the taste and texture of WGF’s bread, flapjacks, cakes, Welshcakes, shortbread, scones, kraft boxed finger cakes, tartlets and sweet pastries, as well as two varieties of quiche – Leek & Cheese, and Red Onion & Red Pepper. In addition, WGF produce vegan gluten-free baked products.
Their skill and invention have paid off, and last year WGF received a coveted Great Taste Award for its bread and rolls – putting the bakery among an elite group of producers.
Says Andrew, “We are also going for SALSA (safe and local supplier approval) accreditation which is required by many wholesalers. We’ve taken on part-time members of staff which enables us to concentrate on other areas of the business such as packaging and how we can reduce our ‘foot-print’ and the amount of plastic used.”
Through its links with Cywain, WGF has been able to tap into a wide range of business training and advice, and through trade events make contacts and display their products to a wider audience.
Says Andrew, “The support we’ve had – and continue to have – from Cywain has been tremendous, they have helped us to move forward as a growing business in the big wide world of the competitive marketplace.”

WGF Bakery Extends their product Range
WGF Bakery from Carmarthen have extended their range of products.
Biscuits are now being made with wonderful flavours such as Raspberry – Orange – Vanilla and a Coconut. WGF Bakery thought have not forgotten the traditional market, producing a new Oat Biscuit that melts in the mouth.
But for those that like sweet things there is a Caramel and Chocolate Tart.

Our small firm is based in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We started some 4½ years ago, the founder was a trained chef having been diagnosed Coeliac with total wheat intolerance, she found little choice around. Our products are made having taste & texture, a better choice for Coeliacs and those who choose not to follow the gluten tract.
We do introduce new products from time to time although this takes time with trials before we release totally.

Breaking Bread: WGF Bakery Products And Aardvark Share Bread Open Day
WGF Bakery Products and Aardvark Alternative are teaming up to hold a sweet pastry and bread open day at Aardvark Alternatives, Carmarthen 12th Oct.
WGF Bakery Products are producers of Welsh gluten free bakery products suitable for Coeliac, Vegan and Vegetarians. On offer are three types of bread, white maize, oatmeal, and a sourdough, available in mini loafs, baguettes, bread buns and 300g loaves. Also on offer are Welsh cakes, flapjacks, conserve tarts, coconut and raspberry, bakewell tartlets, chicken and mushroom and minced beef pies, as well as salmon and chicken en croute and beef wellingtons etc. Vegetarians and Vegans are catered for with vegetarian pies, there are items like Vegan Welsh cakes and Sultana Muffins and bread. All products are gluten free with ingredients sourced locally when possible. Available via mail order and in various health food shops across South West Wales.
Aardvark Alternatives is an independent, family-owned organic emporium and as such it offers it offers the savvy Welsh shopper a more personal means of shopping for groceries locally; with the benefit of supporting a small-scale business in the local community. Aardvark are going to have a 1940’s week in the last week of October (27th-2nd of November). Based around the idea of austerity – the austerity of the 1940’s contrasting sharply with ours during the recession today. They’ll be decking the shop (and the staff) out 1940’s style, recreating some wartime recipes, and having some fantastic offers. They offer home delivery is free for SA postcodes 1-50 except SA9, SA19 and SA20; Charges apply elsewhere.

WGF Bakery Products (Welsh Gluten Free) was started five years ago due to the limited number of gluten free products available. Those that were available tended to be very sweet or tasteless so we decided to make our own. WGF Bakery products offer three breads, white maize, oatmeal, and a sourdough, the maize bread recipe was devised going down a dual carriageway! Fortunately it’s been refined since then, each bread is available in mini loafs, baguettes, bread buns and 300g loaves.

All products are gluten free with ingredients sourced locally when possible. Savory products are also available like chicken and mushroom and minced beef pies, as well as salmon and chicken en croute and beef wellingtons etc.
Vegetarians and Vegans are catered for with vegetarian pies, there are items like Vegan Welsh cakes and Sultana Muffins and bread. As the days get shorter we are getting ready for the festive period with Christmas puddings, mince pies, Christmas cake in fingers and we make sponge fingers for trifles.

August 2017 Update
Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food awards, which celebrates the very best in food and drink, has announced the Great Taste stars of 2017. Out of over 12,300 products to be judged, Welsh Gluten Free Bakery Products in Carmarthenshire was awarded a 1-star Great Taste award, which means judges dubbed there Brown Seeded Bread simply delicious , the bread has a mixture of seeds with a slight nutty taste, good for freezing aswell.
Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind-tasting by hundreds of judges. Welsh Gluten Free Bakery Products decided to enter the Great Taste Awards this year with the Brown Seeded Bread after a couple of years of slight alterations and a proven product that show goer’s like and often had the comment “ it’s just like real bread “ and also” I cannot tell the difference “was also muted , this to me was the signal to try the Great Taste Awards. Andrew who runs the day to day aspects of Welsh Gluten Free was delighted to get the star rating, “it makes all the hard work and hours a bit more of a perspective of the achievement being a small firm.
Recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike, Great Taste values taste above all else, with no regard for branding and packaging. Whether it is gin, biscuits, sausages or coffee being judged, all products are removed from their wrapper, jar, box or bottle before being tasted. The judges then savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-star award.
There were 12,366 Great Taste entries this year and of those products, 165 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,011 received a 2-star and 3,171 were awarded a 1-star accolade. The panel of judges included; chef, food writer and author, Gill Meller, MasterChef judge and restaurant critic, Charles Campion, author and chef, Zoe Adjonyoh, baker, Tom Herbert, and food writer and baking columnist Martha Collison as well as food buyers from Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols. These esteemed palates have together tasted and re-judged the 3-star winners to finally agree on the 2017 Top 50 Foods, the Golden Fork Trophy winners and the 2017 Supreme Champion.
Great Taste 2017 will reach its exciting finale on Monday 4 September, when the world of fine food gathers at the Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel, London to find out the Golden Fork winners for each region at an Awards Dinner, with the final applause reserved for the Great Taste Supreme Champion 2017.
