On June 25th and 26th 2016, as part of Usk Open Gardens, around 20 Usk gardens are open to visitors. They range from lovingly tended cottage gardens to the grand sweep of Usk Castle’s glorious borders – “like a secret castle that no one’s ever found” exclaimed one young visitor. Usk’s garden weekend has become an unmissable treat for garden lovers, who visit from far and wide.
The gardens range from small cottage gardens to the grand sweep of medieval Usk Castle. All are in walking distance of the free car parks and there is a regular mini-bus service around the town (10am – 4.45pm).
Usk is a small picturesque town in Monmouthshire close to Offa’s Dyke & the English Border and has won Wales and Britain in Bloom for many years. A great choice of quaint pubs, cafes and restaurants invite leisurely lunch or tea, and voluntary groups offer delicious home-made refreshments.
If you have time, there are interesting shops, two garden centres, and the Victorian Sessions House and the Rural Life Museum to visit – plus a Gardeners’ Market with plants and garden products.
Park in any of the free town car parks, then buy a ‘Garden Passport’ (including a garden map) from one of the ticket stalls nearby. Choose a one-day or a weekend ticket. All the gardens are within walking distance of the car parks. There is blue-badge parking in all car parks and also at the Castle, and a regular minibus service to gardens on the edge of the town.
Now in its 22nd year, this popular event has raised and distributed over £200,000 for the National Garden Scheme and for local charities.
