Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre’s annual Dragon Parade in the Pembrokeshire coast is set to breathe fire into the annual St David’s Day celebrations on Saturday 4 March, as hundreds of people take to the streets of Britain’s smallest city.
Scores of local school children and Residential Care Group members will be marching proudly through St Davids, within the Pembrokeshire Coast with their colourful handmade creations and banners accompanied by the 948 Squadron Air Training Corps Band.
Oriel y Parc Manager, Jenn Jones said: “Many school children have been working hard with our staff over recent weeks to bring their delightful dragons to life ready for this annual celebration of Welsh culture.
“With Wales celebrating the Year of Legends in 2017, there’s no better time to get involved in the St David’s Day festivities as we mark the birth of the country’s patron saint in the place he was born.
“Don’t forget there will also be an opportunity to see the St David’s Day stone illuminated in the Oriel y Parc courtyard at 12 noon on Wednesday 1 March, weather permitting.”
The Dragon Parade will leave the Oriel y Parc courtyard at 11am and head to the High Street before travelling around the Cross Square and returning to Oriel y Parc.
There is also a packed schedule of St David’s Day activities and events going on in and around St Davids throughout the week leading up to the parade on 4 March.
St Davids – the smallest city in the UK!
Situated on a rugged peninsula, this land is a patchwork of history. Neolithic burial chambers stand in silent command, overlooking sites of Viking raids, while the memories of thousands of pilgrims moving silently to and from the shrine at St Davids, give an air of peace and tranquility.
Beneath St Davids lie some of the oldest rocks in Britain, dating back to the Pre-Cambrian period, around 600 million years ago. When drifting continents collided the rocks on ether side buckled and split. You can see spectacular evidence of this in the cliffs all around St Davids.
