flora showing in Gallery 1, Aberystwyth Arts Centre from 12 July – 17 September 2016 with the official opening night Saturday 23rd July, 6-8pm, is an ambitious contemporary arts project that brings together work by national and international artists to reveal flowers as powerful commentators in art.
From common weeds to exotic cultivars, flowers have been and are embedded in people’s lives across the globe, not least as inspiration to artists. This visually stunning exhibition both in and outside of the gallery presents new and existing work by eleven key artists; Emma Bennett, Michael Boffey, Caroline Dear, Anya Gallaccio, Ori Gersht, Owen Griffiths, Anne-Mie Melis, Jacques Nimki, Magali Nougarède, Yoshihiro Suda, Clare Twomey. These artists offer ways in which flowers make visible cultural, historical, geographic, social and scientific ideas.
flora offers distinct ideas to bring compelling re-interpretations, critical thinking and a refreshed perspective on the subject of the representation of flowers in art. The exhibiting works range from exquisite sculptural forms, echoing the precariousness of life, to highly complex drawings that consider the influence of technology on nature. Stunning paintings and photographs reflect both peace and destruction alongside desire and unattainability, while grown work explores how living flowers and green spaces might act as sites for social change.
This eighteen-month project and tour comprises four new commissions, two artist residencies, three publications and an exhibition with work on loan from national and international artists, private collectors and UK National and Regional collections.
Curated by Oriel Davies and developed in partnership with Oriel Myrddin, Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre and the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
The exhibition offers large print and narrated information about the exhibition and the art works on display.
