We are delighted to welcome Elm Tree Foods to the Monmouthshire Food Festival for the first time.
Elm Tree Foods is a family business with an idea that pies can and should be made better. They don’t want to change the world, but do want to create handmade, tasty pies with uncompromised, delicious ingredients. They work from a purpose built unit at Elm Tree Farm, their farm at Goldcliff near Newport. They work hard to recreate great Classics with an Elm Tree twist, whilst doing their bit to support British farming. Their aim is for their pies to be the best they can be, with British, free range meats and eggs from their own free range chickens.
In February 2011 mother and daughter Cheryll and Collette Crewe started looking for the perfect product to sell on their stall at Farmers Markets. It needed to be familiar, comforting and very British….the Solution, of course, was pies! The business also had to become a true family business where everyone and everything could play a part from the honey bees, the chickens and Dave’s (Cheryll’s husband) cider! The chickens provided the eggs for glazing the pies, and Dave’s home made cider was included into the Porky Pear Pie recipe. Steve (Collette’s partner) designed a logo, took charge of the marketing and helped with the pot washing. Collette sourced Organic meat and cheese from fellow market traders and farmers, truly a family business.
The business was officially launched at the Builth Wells Spring Garden Festival in May 2011. In June, Collette and Cheryll decided to enter some of their pies into The Great British Pie Awards. A few days later they received the outstanding news that the three pies entered had received a Gold, Silver & Bronze award, with over 600 entries and against some very big and established pie producers. It was a phenomenal achievement and they were on their way.
Now five years on the family business is still producing those handmade, tasty pies with uncompromised, delicious ingredients.
