This weekend - Skills Sharing Taster Event
Civic Hall Llandeilo, Sunday 22 Nov, 2-5 pm
Some of us are waking up to the fact that we no longer have a lot of the basic skills our grandparents took for granted. What's more, as a society, we have lost our understanding of the value of those skills. Today a skill is regarded as of little value unless it's certified by a ‘professional' body and can therefore be traded on for money at a later date. But in future, an ability to turn our hand to a range of everyday tasks without needing to call in a specialist will be essential. To increase our resilience as individuals and as a community we need to learn a range of these lost skills. That is why Transition Town Llandeilo, like other transition initiatives, is about to embark on a reskilling programme.
We start by offering a taster afternoon, which will lead to a fuller programme of reskilling days and courses over the coming months.
The afternoon will feature the following:
* Beekeeping - how to get started with your own hive - see the equipment involved and find out about local courses * Sustainable woodworking - using basic hand tools * Rug making - with recycled materials and remnants * Knitting and needlecraft - offering an alternative to our throwaway clothing habits * Sourdough baking - making delicious 'real' bread from the simplest ingredients * Basket making - creating something that's useful and beautiful from sustainable local materials
All are welcome. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.
For more information please contact Sue Weaver 01550 777402 or John Gaffney 01550 740655 ...and if you have skills that you would like to pass onto others, and could offer to share them as part of the programme, then please contact one of them and offer your services.
Skills and Technology group
We now have a Skills and Technology group forming with its own page on the website - http://www.transitiontownllandeilo.org.uk/skills.htm
Pete Arnold says :
We are attempting to be useful by putting together a list of opportunities to share and acquire skills ranging from the simple things we can do for ourselves (and that our grandparents always used to be able to do!), to more specialist skills and even to start the process of acquiring a new (low-carbon!) craft or profession.
As a first step, we are placing offered and wanted ads on this site and a list of resources that we have come across. If you are able to offer tuition to local people in any skill, please let us know and, likewise, if there is anything you would like to know or learn to do, we'll do our best to find someone, locally, who can help.

AGM - Transition in the 2010s
Energy - Food - Transport
The Transition Town Llandeilo AGM will be upstairs at The Angel, Llandeilo, at 7.30 pm on Monday 30th November.
In addition to the essential business of the AGM, we will be considering our way ahead as we move into the second decade of this century. In particular, we will be considering possible projects in the areas of Energy, Food and Transport. We will also consider how we can promote ourselves across the Tywi valley area as well as in Llandeilo itself.
Please come and help shape our future plans.
Copenhagen, London, Carmarthen
Daniel Blackburn is arranging carbon neutral transport for people wanting to attend the National Demonstration on climate change in London, on Saturday the 5th of December, just before the Copenhagen conference on Climate Change.
The Green Dragon Minibus (16 seater) which runs on low carbon Welsh Straight Vegetable Oil has been booked for the day. The bus will leave the Car Park in Crymych between the Petrol Station and the School early (usually at 6am) on Saturday and return late on the same evening. The return fare is £35. Last year the bus stopped at Crosshands. Please contact Daniel to find out whether spaces are available and make a booking. Telephone 01239 698237 or email

The main event will include a march on parliament culminating in a human wave which will surround the Parliament buildings. Those attending are therefore asked to wear blue.
However, there will also be an event closer to home on the same date:
A rally for local people to let our fellow citizens and the politicans know that we all need immediate action on Climate Change
When: 5th Dec at 4:30pm Where: Outside the Court House in central Carmarthen What: Speakers, leaflets, children's eco party games, feasting Bring: good ideas on where to go, food to share and eco posters to diplay and your friends
Please let Soo know if you'd like to come - 01239 820 951 - so they have an idea of numbers.
Nurturing Hope as light returns A workshop in the tradition of Joanna Macy's Work that Reconnects
Friday evening 29th January and Saturday 30th January 2010
This may be a hard winter for those who long for change within the human psyche. There are huge challenges ahead to us all as individuals, and at community, government and international level - yet people all over the planet are raising their voices in concern and demonstrating their passion for life. The awareness is growing that we need a shift in consciousness and new ways of relating to each other and our earth home.
We offer a workshop to gather together those who want to enliven all that is hopeful within us, to find a way through whatever grief and despair, anger or powerlessness grip us - and connect with the budding Earth energy of this changing season.
*******
The workshop is facilitated by Sue Weaver and Rosemary Bell.
Cost: £20
Venue: Llwynbwch
If you would like further information or are interested in attending please contact Sue.

Makers of Coal House Looking For Participants for Snowdonia Farmhouse
I have received this request by email:
I'm working on a living history television series called Snowdonia Farmhouse, from the same makers of Coal House. Two families will be transported back to the primitive existence of 1890s Snowdonia hillside farmers. We are currently looking for families to take part. To apply please go to the BBC Wales home page (bbc.co.uk/wales) where you'll see our advert plus a link to our application form or call 03703 500 700.
It would be fantastic to hear from families who have an interest in self-sufficiency, sustainability and environmental issues.
Many thanks,
Helen Cawley
Assistant Producer, Snowdonia Farmhouse
Petition for legislation to stop shops leaving their doors open in cold weather
Jeremy Thorp of Transition Newtown has created a petition on the governments website to ask for this to be banned. If you agree with me that this is completely irresponsible in our current predicament of global warming, please can you add your name to the petition. The link is here http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/shut-the-door/
Llandeilo Country Market
In my coverage of the Prince's visit I failed to mention the Llandeilo Country Market .
During his visit to Llandeilo Civic Hall, Prince Charles spent some time in the market admiring the goods on offer and talking with producers and customers. Before leaving the market, he was presented with a gift bag containing a selection of market items.
Selling local goods produced by local people, Llandeilo Country Market is one of over 400 separate co-operative markets whose producers are shareholders of Country Markets Ltd, which has recently received funding from the Making Local Food Work Project.
Llandeilo Country Market has home baking, crafts, plants and seasonal fruit and vegetables and is held in Llandeilo Civic Hall on Fridays from 8.30am to 12.30pm
