The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) conducted a review of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This consultation seeks views on their recommendations to amend the list of species of animals and plants protected under the Act.

Start of consultation: 27/01/2010

End of consultation: 20/04/2010

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (WCA) protects all wild birds, certain animals and certain plants. It does this by listing them in relevant parts of the Act called Schedules. The WCA requires that Schedule 5 (protected animals other than birds) and 8 (protected plants) be reviewed every five years by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC). The JNCC must then advise Ministers of whether species should be added or removed.
