Wheelbase - Twenty - 10 is planned for Tuesday, 16 February (half term) at Deeside Leisure Centre. Flintshire County Council in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government and Barclay's Spaces for Sport has recently employed Alex Gray as the first ever Wheeled Sports Development Officer for the county. Part of Alex's remit will be to lead the preparations for the event and to further increase the popularity and opportunities for wheeled sports within the county.

Alex Gray has been a life-long enthusiast for all wheeled sports and worked as a Wheeled Sports Officer at Camp America for two seasons and a year with the Flintshire Youth Offending Team working with young people to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. He is the first Wheeled Sports Development officer of its kind in Wales.

The new post has been created in partnership with the Council's Play Unit, Welsh Assembly Government, Flintshire Cymorth Management Board, Ground Works Wrexham, Flintshire Barclay's Spaces for Sports and Sport Flintshire (LAPA - Local Authority Partnership Agreement).

Wheeled sports include BMX, mountain-biking, skate-boarding, in-line skate and cycling.

Since the last Wheelbase showcase in 2003 there has been increased consultation with young people and communities and more involvement of young people in the design of skate facilities. Equipment has also been purchased and maintained at skate parks in Hawarden, Buckley, Flint and Connah's Quay.

The Wheelbase - Twenty - 10 event will include an indoor skate provision with mini ramps, music and consultation, pro-riders, competitions and prizes.

Alex said: "I'm really pleased to be working in Flintshire promoting wheeled sports across the county and encouraging people to get involved. We will give out more details on the event nearer the time and more ways to join in."

Alex can be contacted on 01352 702483 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
