Award-winning Institute maintains lead in developing new crop

Scientists at Aberystwyth University are once again leading the way in developing new varieties of one of the UK's most important crops. And they've even beaten the Tardis in the process!

The University's Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) has had two new winter oat varieties placed on the definitive crop list recommended by the Home Grown Cereals Authority, the body that promotes the production, wholesomeness and marketing of UK grain.

There is increasing awareness of the value of oats both for human consumption and as a high value animal feed. Both varieties build on decades of success at IBERS and provide farmers, millers and feed compounders with oats that are more productive, resilient and easier to grow.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

Weaving willow domes and bashing brambles were all in a chilly day's work for ten young people on a Prince's Trust team project in February.

Battling against the elements, Fishguard-based Prince's Trust Team 129 worked with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority Rangers Carol Owen and Richard Vaughan on projects at a school, in National Park woodlands and on the Coast Path.

Carol said: "As part of their twelve-week team programme, the young people spent three days developing the new school garden at Ysgol Llanychllwydog in Cwm Gwaun, creating a fantastic area for the children to use when the weather warms up.

"The team constructed a log seating circle, planted a willow dome, filled planters, built seats and planted as part of the project developed in partnership with the school and National Park Authority Rangers.

Enjoy egg-cellent waste-free gifts this Easter
Gwynedd
Thursday, 18 March 2010 06:09
With about 80 million chocolate eggs expected to be bought in the UK this Easter, Gwynedd Council has partnered with Waste Awareness Wales to encourage consumers to reduce the amount of packaging waste that these chocolate eggs create.

Councillor Greth Roberts, who leads on the Environment on Gwynedd Council said: "While we certainly don't want to deny chocoholics their sweet treats, we do have to highlight the fact that the vast majority of packaging from Easter eggs will head straight to landfill.

"We only have about eight years of landfill space left in Wales, which is why we are asking shoppers in Gwynedd to be mindful of this when buying their Easter eggs. So this year, why not try and select eggs that are not excessively packaged such as those wrapped only in foil. They still taste as good, but you'll be doing your bit for the environment.
