Jean Turner is the longest serving active woman in Traditional Cheddar Cheese making. Her Mother and Father started making cheddar at Batch Farm in 1963 and she was heavily involved from the start. She is still very involved in the whole process and has a definite ‘hands on’ approach. Each day you can find her making, larding, cutting and packing the cheese as well as keeping a keen eye on the everyday running of the dairy. According to those who know Jean is the backbone of the company. When asked, all at Batch Farm say the same thing “They don’t make ‘em like they used to!”
Gould’s traditional Farmhouse Cheddar made by Batch Farm Cheese Makers is the finest farmhouse cheddar in Somerset, if not the UK. Gould’s is a multi award winning cheddar cheese and is crafted by hand using traditional methods passed down through the family for generations. All their farmhouse cheddar cheese is made using the milk from their own dairy herd, meaning the milk for their cheese travels minutes rather than days or hours before being turned into award winning cheese.
Over the past 50 years they have racked up an impressive amount of awards. From The British Cheese Awards at the Royal Bath and West Show, The Global Cheese Awards at the Frome Agricultural Show and the World Cheese Awards.
