Welsh Arts News

Of the 68 members of the vibrant Borderland Visual Arts artists' network based in Oswestry, almost half live or work in Wales or have Welsh connections. A significant number of them will be participating in this year's Open Studios event over the weekends of 9/10th June and 16/17th June, in and around Oswestry. The ten studios open in Wales stretch from the Ceiriog
Valley to Llansantffraid, showing the work of fifteen artists, with a further number sharing studios in Oswestry.

The stunning, innovative work of Jan Singleton working in contemporary stained and fused glass, can be seen at the Pandy Mill Studio and Gallery in a most picturesque setting in Pandy. The gallery itself is an extraordinarily beautiful space and the perfect setting for her exceptional work. The artist has perfected her techniques over more than 20 years and has advanced the copper foil technique to the point where she can construct large floor to ceiling panels, without the need for obtrusive strengthening bars. An abstract panel entitled "Seven", representing seven levels of life, is on permanent display  amongst her other work  at the gallery.

Thursday, November 24th, BBC One Wales, 9pm. BBC Cymru Wales’ drama Baker Boys returns for a much anticipated second series this week, with Valley Bara Bakery in limbo following Rob’s disappearance.

If he pulls his money out he will force it to close and the community is already struggling through the recession. What future will they have without jobs? Rich’s birthday celebration brings some relief from the tensions but the resentment the workforce feel towards Owen is never far from the surface. He faces a bitter truth that he and Sarah are responsible for putting everyone’s livelihoods in danger. Times are hard for everyone, but Lucy and Dave have the added financial pressure of a young family. On minimum wage with a mortgage to pay, they find it increasingly difficult to manage.

Written by Helen Raynor and Gary Owen, Baker Boys was filmed in south Wales at locations including Bedwas, Abercynon, Caerphilly and Trethomas.

It was a tough choice - Christmas on Australia's Bondi Beach or the former North Wales mining village of Rhos.
