Sensuous enchantment, vibrance, colours, textures, depth and decoration. I am intrigued and excited by stories, places, my imagination, dreams, music and journeys. Whichever I choose can develop and distill, juxtaposing the layers, colours and embellishments, always striving for my own unique space.

Jan Gardner was born and brought up in North Wales and spent much of her early years wandering the lanes and hills around her home. It was here that the light, space and colours that inhabit her work first became an influence. Drawing on these memories and experiences of special places and her later travels in Europe, Morocco and the U.S.A.; she crafts vivid and atmospheric works. Colours that fly in from emotion and passion, relaying a deep connection with the varied, differing landscapes from which they evolve.

This 4 day workshop introduces a variety of drawing materials and ways of drawing in colour, using representational observation and drawing with a range of tools, e.g pencil, pastel, dip pen, brush, stick sponge, spray. We will also look at some colour theory and explore colour mixing, mark making and experimenting with water- colour. This 'Land of colour' experience is for people with no previous experience who would like to explore the magical world of colour.

The 4 days will enable participants to be inspired by natural forms and the landscape. Those taking part will be encouraged to use colour and mark making with a range of media (acrylics, inks, pastel and collage) to gain insight into their own responses. Jan encourages you to have the confidence to explore your own unique way of working through drawing and painting. With the stunning backdrop of Dolwyddelan and seasonal range of colours and views of the area we will explore ways of working in sketchbooks and a range of pieces on water-colour paper. This workshop is especially for those who would like to explore mixed media for the first time as well as those with some experience.

Capel Iwan based artist Philippa Sibert is showcasing her work in an exhibition entitled ‘Where There Are Birds’.  Held in the School of Creative Arts at Coleg Sir Gar, Carmarthen, it takes place between 16th April and 11th May, with a private viewing on April 15th. The exhibition will showcase ideas and themes about the garden space and Philippa will be showing a collection of paintings, drawings, wall mounted assemblages and a collection of inspiration pieces.

Her working methods are very 'hands on' scratching and scraping the surface allows previous sections to be revealed and then choosing to keep certain areas and obliterate others. This approach to her paintings means that many canvases and boards are worked on over long periods of time. Some are put away only to resurface at a later stage when she can see afresh some potential and start working on it all over again.

The Cloisters Gallery, St. Davids Cathedral, is showcasing work by textile and fine artist, Eileen Harrisson, between 20th March and 2nd April, 2012.  Currently completing her MA in Art and Art History at Aberystwyth University, where she obtained her Joint Honours BA in Art and Italian, the installation titled, The Invitation, is based around dramatic abstract interpretations of Christ and the Twelve Apostles in a Last Supper setting, accompanied by representations of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene.  Responding to the quality of light moving over the Snowdonian mountains where she lives and spirituality of the Welsh landscape and people, The Invitation displays what Professor John Harvey terms her deft use of colour and stitched layers’ “rich impasto”, work in which, “The spiritual allusions proliferate”.

To further enhance the artwork’s contemplative ambience, the artist composed a cadence in G minor for voice and double bass which, recorded in her “embroidered sound”, plays alongside the visual components.  Exhibiting regularly in Wales and beyond, including the Mall Galleries, London, with exhibiting group, PRISM, and delighted to be showing her work in the beautiful location of St Davids, Eileen looks forward to reaching out to an ever-growing audience through her enduring love of colour, stitch and spirit.
