The hills may be the main draw but there's some scintillating walking in the valleys of the Brecon Beacons National Park, as this short but tough ramble from Pontneddfechan proves nicely. Or to be more precise, about the impressive waterfalls found along their helter-skelter courses.
The highlight is Sgwd yr Eira - the Falls of Snow - an imposing cascade that you can actually walk behind in classic fairy tale style. But there are many other jewels on the Afon Hepste, particularly Sgwd Clun-Gwyn Isaf (the Lower Waterfall of the White Meadow) where the water seems to tumble down from all points of the compass; and also along the Afon Nedd Fechan and its tributaries, the best of which being the stunning Sgwd Gwladus, close to the finish. Although it's a low-level walk, it's not particularly suuitable for children as the going is rough and slippery and there are many very steep drops.
