Nestlestones, Ammanford

NestlestonesBorn and bred in Ammanford, Gordon and Jennine James returned to the area in search for a quieter life. They opened Nestlestones at the end of November 2003 but have failed to get the peaceful life they hoped for as their business has proved so popular. They’re objective was to try and re-instate the very traditional Italian temperance bars/cafes, popular in the Welsh valleys during   the 1940 - 50s, with a family environment for people to come to during the day or after work. There are 18 covers in the Deli Area and 27 covers in the bistro-style restaurant upstairs. Bridgend based company Ferrari’s supply the coffee blend, Piacentina – which means a little pleasure and also a Welsh tea blend. You can even just pop in to buy some " Heavenly" ice cream, which is made in Llandeilo and there’s 10 flavours to choose from.

Driving through Ammanford recently, my friend and I thought a cup of coffee was long overdue so we parked up and I am so pleased we did! Recently opened, this is a venue which has got the whole package of setting, staff, food and drink selection just right. Welcoming staff and a lovely friendly atmosphere impressed us immediately. Two delicious mocha coffees were speedily brought and whilst we sipped those, it gave us time to check out the fresh deli counter which is in the customer eating area. What a selection of scrumptious foods to buy, from cheeses to cooked meats, home-made preserves and chutneys, cakes and pastries, as well as a varied assortment of health foods and prepared dishes. Well that was it, we couldn’t leave without eating something – it just didn’t seem fair!

My choice was a toasted cíabatta with Welsh cheddar cheese, red onion, tomato and pesto which was served with salad garnish and fresh Nestlestones scrumptious coleslaw. My friend was tempted with the home roasted ham salad served with new potatoes and Nestlestones coleslaw. Both lunches were delicious and although on this occasion we were only just strong-willed enough not to select a dessert, we will surely return and remedy that, along with trying daily specials board which is also proving very popular.

Regular readers will know how important pleasant staff are to the Hungry Dragon; in fact I have been known to leave before ordering if staff are disagreeable or disinterested. So full marks for the staff at Nestlestones, who were polite, gave good service, knew their menu and still had time for a friendly chat! This business deserves to go from strength to strength, so if you are in the area, do call in – a warm welcome and good food and drink await.
