A friend told me about
Wales'
only specialist semi-mature plant centre. I was looking for a tree and some
shrubs so I went to the Grandiflora
plant & garden centre to look through their huge selection. I
was also surprised and impressed with their range of palms and bamboo, plus a
host of unusual plants. But my biggest surprise, and what my gardening mate hadn’t
told me, was about Bramleys Tearoom which is also at the plant centre.
As selecting shrubs and plants is such thirsty
work, we had no choice but to pop into Bramleys for a cup of tea. A warm
welcome was a great start and when we saw the dessert and cake list – that was
it! All home-made, we couldn’t resist, plus it had started to rain! We chose
banana cake and a bakewell slice and they were absolutely scrummy, and when the
rain had stopped we continued our shrub shopping, which took quite some time as
there was simply so much to wander around. They had one of the best selections
of plants and tubs that I have seen for ages, plus I was tempted by a couple of
beautifully planted up tubs, that were underplanted with spring bulbs too.
Then it was back into
Bramleys for lunch and what a treat was in store for us. I chose a Bramley
Favourite, steak pie with shortcrust pastry, rich gravy and seasonal vegetables
and potatoes, whilst my partner went for the vegetarian option of Glamorgan
sausages and all the trimmings. He said that they were the best he had ever
tasted – which is some compliment as this is one of his favourite dishes, so he
does call himself a Glamorgan sausage expert! Good portions meant that we were full,
but as I couldn’t ignore the desserts, we had to compromise and share a
chocolate crunch torte with Mary’s Farmhouse ice-cream. It was heavenly. Their
menu is varied and includes fishcakes, ploughmans, Welsh rarebit, lasagne, gardeners’
lunch, jackets, toasties and rolls. They also run a daily specials board.
Seriously, there’s something for every taste.
