Fresh local produce is set to be available in Pembrokeshire at the click of a button.
Early next year, a new venture called ‘Pembrokeshire Produce Direct' will be launched enabling anyone in the County to order locally-produced goods on the Internet, and have them delivered directly to their door.
All sorts of produce, from meat and fish to vegetables, breads, cakes, cheese, milk, flavoured drinks, spring water, and much more will be available on the Pembrokeshire Produce Direct website.
The venture aims to make local produce more accessible to everyone in the community.
One of the directors of the scheme, Andy Cook, of Rhos Hill Herbs and Garden Plants, said: "It's about getting local food to as many local people as we can.
"We've got some cracking producers in Pembrokeshire, and I think it's so important to make local food - and good food - available to everyone."
‘Pembrokeshire Produce Direct' also aims to open up new market opportunities to producers, help them develop their business through e-commerce, and provide them with further ways of working together. The scheme also seeks to save food miles where possible.
Already, 30 producers from Pembrokeshire and the borders of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire are interested in providing goods.
Deliveries will take place once a week, on a Thursday or Friday, not only to private homes but also workplaces, schools, and various organisations.
Those who don't have access to the Internet can order goods from a catalogue.
Pembrokeshire Produce Direct is a not-for-profit co-operative and the directors are Geraint Bowen of Bethesda Meat, Martin Davies of Cuckoo Mill Farm, Pelcomb, Tim Bodfish of West Atherton, Narberth, Rob Gibby of Llaeth Bethesda Milk, Andy Cook of Rhos Hill Herbs and Garden Plants, and Glyn Thomas, retired director of Abertrinant Eggs.
The initiative was developed with the assistance of Pembrokeshire County Council, the Welsh Assembly Government, the Landsker Business Centre, and the Wales Co-operative Centre.
The project has received a Supply Chain Efficiency Grant, from the Rural Development Fund.
Geraint Bowen, of Bethesda Farm Shop, said: "This is a really exciting new project which will enable people in Pembrokeshire who can't attend Farmers Markets, or similar local food outlets, to purchase quality local produce."
Rob Gibby, of Llaeth Bethesda Milk, said the scheme builds on the rising local interest in where our food and drink comes from. "Five years ago, when we started, there was some interest in local produce, but since then it has really grown," he said.
