Snowdonia Society's Conservation Volunteers are planning to bang the drum against plastic carrier bags and so
are arranging a couple of dates to coincide with National Volunteer week, 1-7 June.
Wednesday 4th June 2008 - 10 to 4 at Capel Curig Community Centre: With as many sewing machines as we can muster, as
much old fabric as we can
gather - by this I mean, unwanted curtains, bedding and upholstery fabric, or
clothes if they can be easily converted - we will be making up a variety
of fabric reusable shopping bags.
Saturday 7th June 2008: We will scatter around the park to distribute the
bags very visibly in places where plastic bags are widely distributed. We
intend to hand the bags out for free, with donations to the Society
should people wish, to help us continue our conservation tasks around the Snowdonia National Park.
This will give us a chance to highlight the problem of plastic bags
within the National Park, so any ideas for impromptu stands or displays to take
with us would be brilliant.
So to
summarise... we need anyone willing to man and possibly
lend a sewing machine for the day. If
you are an experienced sewer please come along and help the novices. We will be hoping also to put together a
simple instruction sheet to place in the bags so that people can go off and
create more of the same. We want to
spread the word about how easy it is to convert old items into newly
recycled and very useful items that are cheap, readily available, and kind to
the environment.
What
do you think?? Come along and give it a
try, bring anyone you know who would love to help, and let's see if we can get
this movement rolling.
