South Caernarfon Creameries

 Image

ImageJohn Owen Roberts had a vision. His vision was to see dairy farmers working together to enable them to get a better price for their milk. That vision was back in 1938 and signified the launch of South Caernarfon Creameries. Now, 70 years on, we remain Wales’ leading farmer-owned dairy co-operative, processing 112 million litres of milk each year for our award-winning dairy and cheese range. We no longer collect milk in churns like they did back in 1938; nowadays it’s collected using our fleet of tankers who visit farms seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. Membership in 1938 was a tentative 63 producer members. At that time, farmers were reluctant to commit to another co-operative as some in the area had already failed. Today, membership has swelled to almost 170 member farmers, located from North Wales to Mid Wales; and the creamery has remained on its original site near Chwilog on the picturesque Llŷn Peninsula and Eifionydd. South Caernarfon Creameries has a long tradition of making cheeses. The site began cheese production in 1959 and today produces 10,500 tonnes of cheese each year, using in excess of 100 million litres of milk. Unlike some of the larger, more modern creameries, we still use traditional production methods.  We supply a range of high quality dairy products including cheese, milk, butter, cream and buttermilk to a variety of customers; from smaller independent grocers, to large supermarkets and food service companies – you can even buy direct from our on-line shop! Our cheese range is packed into retail packs, large deli blocks or can be bought in bulk and includes, amongst others, own branded territorials and our own Vintage Special Reserve, Old Shire. The dairy range is also packed into retail style packaging and we were amongst the first companies to pack milk in bags in the UK. Milk bags packed in South Cearnarfon Creameries is currently being used by a major national café chain. Quality is key, from the raw ingredient to the end product, which is reflected in numerous awards that we've won. We have also been recognised many times at the True Taste of Wales awards. We recommend that you keep abreast of our news as we’re always launching something new!
