Several exciting new events celebrating Pembrokeshire's
fantastic coastline and waterways are on the menu for Pembrokeshire Fish Week
2008.
From an adventure watersports day to
eco-fishing, windsurfing lessons, and guided kayak trips, there are loads of
opportunities to discover another aspect of the county.
New this year is a watersports taster day at Llys-y-Fran Country Park,
organised by the Princes Trust and Llys-y-Fran rangers, where you can try
canoeing, kayaking, abseiling, or longboat-rowing.
Also new are eco-fishing adventures with TYF Adventure in
St Davids - enjoy a gentle introduction to sea kayaking and fishing and with a
spot of luck, you'll be cooking mackerel, bass and lobster back at the
eco-hotel barbecue!
Another first this year are evening kayak trips from Dale
up the Gann - admire the abundant bird, wildlife and shoreline of this pretty
inlet - or guided Cleddau river discovery canoe trips, stopping at your
destination for a delicious fish lunch.
Windsurfing and sailing sessions are also available at Dale with expert
tutors, for all ages and abilities.
There's also lots of other opportunities to enjoy the great
outdoors as part of Fish Week. Learn how to forage and cook what you find in a
coastal bushcraft and foraging weekend at woodland near Sandy Haven - camp out
overnight and learn valuable fire, shelter and water procurement skills.
Also on offer are mackerel and pollack fishing trips, jet
ski safaris around Caldey Island, ‘cook your own catch' fishing trips, pedalo,
motor and sail boat hire, together with climbing, abseiling, coasteering,
surfing, diving, rock climbing, and snorkelling tuition.
If you'd like to explore one of Pembrokeshire's islands, why
not try ‘An Island Paradise' - a four-mile ramble enjoying the birds, wild
flowers and history of Skomer. Alternatively, you can enjoy exhilarating
venture jet trips around the rugged St Davids Head and boat wildlife trips to
Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm islands - seek out seals, birds, porpoise and
maybe even whales and dolphins! Experienced divers can also take part in a
scallop survey with Skomer Marine Nature Reserve Volunteer Divers.
For children, there's crab-catching at Carew, Dale, or Porthclais Harbour, snorkel safaris at St Brides,
beach activity and sport days, and much more.
If you'd like to learn more about Pembrokeshire's coastal
and marine life, there's ‘Rockpool Revelations' - a photographic exhibition by
Judith Oakley of rocky shore life, at the National Park Offices in Tenby.
Local marine biologists will be giving a talk and slide
show about the fantastic marine life around the Marloes peninsula, at the local
Clock House café bar - plus a dinner of Clock House crab cakes or Jack Sound
Mackerel or Gravadlax and Pembrokeshire new potatoes.
Or why not find out more about ‘take zones' in
Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum's ‘No Take Zones' debate at the Merlin Theatre, Pembrokeshire College?
Pembrokeshire Fish Week is held from 21st to 29th
June and there are nearly 200 events throughout the week, from angling
competitions to fun days and over 50 fresh seafood menus and events for
food-lovers.
