Visitors invited to help celebrate European Day of Parks

Visitors to Brecon Beacons National Park are being invited to help celebrate the tenth European Day of Parks on Saturday 24th May with some of the best guided walks and activities offered throughout Wales.

Organised by National Park staff and volunteers, this year's theme "Nature - Bridging Borders" promises to capture cross boundary issues, highlight access for all and encourage participation in protection areas.  To commemorate European Day of Parks and European Geoparks Fortnight - which also occurs during May - activities have been organised on Saturday 24th May that include children's activities, guided walks and nature days allowing visitors to see the very best of what the Brecon Beacons National Park has to offer.  Booking is essential for all events.

Some of the events on offer include:

·        An afternoon of fun and sustainable children's activities at Craig-y-nos Country Park.  For more details call Country Park Warden, Ageliki Politis on 01639 730395.

·        A bimble round the bog, looking for bug-eating plants and plant-eating bugs! Learn more about the fascinating wildlife of Traeth Mawr and how we look after it for future generations.  For more details call Visitor Centre Warden, Natalie Fisher 01874 623366.

·        Discovering how natural forces shaped the ground beneath your feet on a geology walk at Talybont, taking in the stunning scenery of the Geopark's Central Beacons.

Chris Gledhill, Chief Executive for Brecon Beacons National Park Authority said:  "European Day of Parks and European Geoparks Fortnight are special events for our residents and visitors to celebrate the protection of European landscapes and participate in outdoor activities that highlight biodiversity, geology, sustainability and conservation issues.

"We are excited to host a fabulous range of activities during May that direct people's attentions to our conservation efforts in the National Park."

A complete listing of guided walks and events in the Park this season is available at www.breconbeacons.org, or you can phone 01874 623366 for a free booklet.
