Have a go at Fishing!

Have you ever wanted to try fishing, but don’t know where to start? Help is at hand from Pembrokeshire Fish Week!

The festival, held from 21st to 29th June, has learn-to-fish days at many fisheries around the county.  Free sessions will be held at Ian Heaps Premier Fisheries at Holgan Farm, Llawhaden; Treffgarne Angling Centre; Llys-y-Fran Country Park near Clarbeston Road, White House Mill Trout Fishery in Lampeter Velfrey, and Llyn Carfan Coarse Fishery at Tavernspite.

There’s also a free Coaching Day on 28th June at Fishguard Harbour, held as part of the StenaLine Sea Angling Festival. The event is open to everyone, from complete beginners to those wanting to improve their skills. Coaching is provided by the Welsh Surf Casting Team and the Welsh Federation.

For more experienced anglers, there’s plenty of competitions.

New this year is the FBM Holidays Pembrokeshire Fish Week Coarse Fishing Championships, where entrants can potentially fish the three ponds at former world champion Ian Heaps’ premier coarse fishery at Llawhaden.

The first prize is £300, plus a trophy and dinner for two at The Bush Inn, Robeston Wathen. The second prize is £225, 3rd prize is £150, and 4th prize is £75. There is a prize for the biggest fish, sponsored by Brite Lites of Haverfordwest.

The competition will be held at Holgan Farm Course Fishery on 28th June, with three-hour qualifying heats taking place from 23rd June to 27th June.

The popular Stena Line Sea Angling Festival, which drew entrants from all over Britain at its launch last year, will take place on 29th June. The PENNS Points and catch release competition will be held on the Fishguard Harbour breakwater. The first prize is £750, second prize is £250, and the third prize is £100, with fishing from 1pm to 5pm. There are limited places, with 70 pegs available.

Entry fee is £15 plus £5 optional pool. Entries must be registered before the competition with Martin Thompson, Anglers Corner, Milford Haven on 01646 698899.

Anglers with disabilities can enjoy the Pembrokeshire Anglers Association’s free Treffgarne Gorge Fishing Day on 25th June. Rods and equipment are supplied, and qualified coaches are available to advise and help.

New events this year include the Milford Haven Small Boat Angling Festival, at Milford Haven Marina on 21st June and 22nd June. The catch and release species hunt competition for anglers in trailerable boats is in aid of the RNLI Angle Lifeboat Fund. There are various cash and fishing tackle prizes available. To enter, contact Andrew Walters on 01348 874773 / 07972 548980 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Also new is the TYF Eco-Fishing Adventure off the St Davids coast. An instructor will guide you through all the basic kayaking skills and safety at sea.  Then, the fishing experience will begin, and with a spot of luck, you’ll be cooking your catch back at the eco-hotel barbecue.

If you want to know all about Bass Fishing, come and meet experienced bass fisherman John Gaze at the Harbour beach, Tenby, with his boat ‘Gayle Force’ on 22nd June.  Learn how to make bait, how to prepare and use fishing tackle, minimise tackle loss, and knot tying, plus listen to John’s fishing stories.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week has well over 150 events for all the family county-wide and will be launched on Saturday, 21st June with a fun-filled open day at Milford Haven Docks. The Sea Fair Haven festival will also be taking place, where you can go on board a variety of tall ships and view classic boats moored at the Docks.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week is organised by Pembrokeshire County Council.
