Seaside Plants

Gardening along the coast of Wales can present considerable problems for the most skilled gardener with challenges that are not found by those of us living further inland. The natural conditions at the seaside are very hostile for many garden plants and consequently it is particularly important to choose the right plants and to give them the best start you can by preparing the planting site. The problems that coastal plants have to contend with are strong winds, which play havoc with evergreens, salt spray covering foliage, dry sandy soils with little moisture, blown sand and sea water, which can leach through the soil or flood some gardens during high tides or in storm surges.
