There
are two species of hare in the UK;
brown and mountain, but only the brown hare is known in Wales. They are distinguished from rabbits by their long black-tipped ears, loping
gait, long limbs and larger size. Hares do not have burrows; they have small depressions in the
ground, known as ‘forms'. Hares are extremely fast and can cover the ground at
up to 45mph using their powerful back legs. It is thought that
brown hares were introduced to Britain
by the Romans, and although they have remained on our soil somewhat longer than
the conquering armies, they have had their own battles to contend with. The
brown hare is one of our most fascinating animals and it is easy to see how they have become the focus of so many myths and legends.
