Not gardens with borders but gardens on the border! Last summer I took a rare day off from the
nursery to visit two gardens near Presteigne, on the
Welsh border. The main reason for going in early June was to see Iris sibirica in flower and the Lingen
Nursery & Garden holds a national collection of these plants. Whilst in the
area I also visited the plantsman's garden at Bryan's Ground created by David Wheeler and
Simon Dorrell, editors of the highly respected Hortus magazine. The convoluted journey
through Lampeter, Llandovery and Builth Wells took me through unspoilt
countryside, with hedges full of blossom, past small villages and rural farms
which showed little sign of change since my last visit to this part of Wales,
over forty years ago!
