Monmouth's a grand town; attractive, yet
bustling; smart, but not at all unwelcoming. It wasn't always like this; its
position, on the banks of the River Wye, right on the England/Wales border, once
gave it a strategic importance disproportional to its size, and led to many
fortifications being built. Some of which, like the gatehouse on the Monnow
Bridge, can still be seen today. But it's the
countryside that surrounds the small market town that provides the real draw.
The River Wye glides lazily through wonderful rolling hills both upstream and
downstream of its imposing bridges; and the River Monnow, whilst not quite as
majestic as the Wye, still has a story to tell; rising some miles west of here,
in the foothills of the Black Mountains.
